why do my sps do this?

i have a few sps in my tank at the moment. they all seem to be ok, but i notice that they seem to grow the base and not get taller. does anybody have an answer as to why? i do know that some only "plate", but i have ones that get branches. i have for example green slimer and bali tri-color. any ideas would be helpful.

Acropora will spread out a base before growing vertically so that they are more stable. You'll also find that differences in flow will result in thicker/thinner branches. I've had a couple corals that did nothing but encrust for about a year, but once the vertical growth started they took off. Just hang in there and you'll see some vertical growth before you know it!

Same here. I have a Red Planet that refuses to grow upwards.

yeah, completely normal dont worry, one day they will explode upwards if everything is in check in your system.

Try some sea chem reef plus. I had a frag if tricolor valida that doubled inn size in 45 days. Pics are in my tank thread.

LOL I highly doubt some snake oil in a bottle will make his acros want to grow upward...

Sorry I offended you. Many, including myself, do not advocate adding "trace elements" in which you cannot test for. Almost all of the bottled trace element products out there are not needed and can end doing more harm than good, as who really knows what elements are actually being depleted, and at what rate.

What the OP is describing is completely normal for Acropora when establishing themselves. Many frags will only exhibit growth at the base area until they have a solid foundation to actually be able to support the weight of a full canopy of branching growth later on.

+1. I've had this for several months and it has fully encrusted the top of the plug and done so a while back. I can only assume it is going around the bottom and down the stem. Hopefully soon it will take off.

I've been saying that about mine for 2 years! :cry:

I only within the past week or two has a place in the middle that looks like it's growing upwards. It has long since encrusted the entire rock and down the sides.

I was making an informed suggestion based on years of experience with a product with photographic evidence of growth results in my tank. Your reply to my post was not helpful in the slightest way. Now if you would have responded with what i quoted in this post then maybe that would have been useful. At least i was trying to help not just "LOLing" at someone else's opinion. Don't bother responding I'm going to unsubscribe from this thread and block you.

Hey guys it is ok. I myself do not add to much extra in my tank. I have actually found that is the best way. Never saw my tank so healthy as it is now that i stopped adding extra stuff

I found if you don't give it a lot of room to grow flat it will grow up for example mount on a plug not disk and glue plug where you want it after it incrusts the the top.of the plug it will.grow up I like doing mine like this BC if it get to big for its spot I can always move it where I like and it fits instead of it incrusting a big rock
