Bio pellets are new since I kept a reef tank.. What are they filtering exactly? I assume they are similar to GFO? Could you recommend a filter/pump setup for a 150 gallon? Or should GFO be the way togo. I am battling algae abit granted the tank is only a month and half old.

They act as a carbon source for your tank, which essentially feeds bacteria that eat up nutrients. :) That's it in a nutshell. The more you feed your tank, the better they work! Its quite a contrast to traditional reef keeping and is awesome.

Well, I guess my bio pellets are doing their job. I definitely get the foul odor when I wait too long. And my skimmate is virtually black. Pretty nasty.

IMO, let the new tank algae run its course. Use GFO or Phosguard if you want, but until you have a higher bio load the pellets aren't going to be the best answer.
