My wife and I are curious what is the ratio of flame angels that damage corals to flame angels that don’t and never do.
You are asking what is the ratio of flame angels in a reef tank vs flame angels in a Fowlr?

They have always gotten around to eating coral in my reefs, they may not at first but they will learn to eat coral in their tank.

Had 3 in different tanks, never a problem. Clams and corals of all kinds.

Current fella….

following as I have always wanted one also, on a side note I have a coral beauty and it doesn't care for lps or softies

Ooops, my brain defaulted to flameback angel since thats what I kept. They decided to much on my diaseris/fungias so I got rid of them.

Not sure about the flame angels though lol Guess my vote muddied the results a little

I have a pair that were in my 50 gallon for over a year. Just moved to a 75 gallon. Only pick at rocks.

I’ll let you know . I had to set up a new 70 gallon tank for a flame angel that was getting tortured to death by a pygmy dwarf angel that was in a 210 gallon tank and apparently even with 200 pounds of rock that was not enough separation to stop the warfare. so right now in my new 70 gallon tank I have a flame angel and a small zoa that I had to rescue as well. It kept falling off of my rocks. so far there’s been no picking on the Zoa

The flame is waiting for the zoa to grow into a nice colony before it eats lunch 😇 .

I suspect that each tank is fed differently, and the patterns of Flame eating coral, or not, will probably be impacted by this? Again, I tried more than once, and every time I promised never again. Maybe I just chose naughty ones?

I don’t know. I was a big fan of saying you could mix dwarf angels together because I had no problem doing it in smaller tanks before with lots of rock. this time the dwarf pygmy Angel read the manual and realized he was supposed to kill any centropyge within 100 yards of his territory. Both my Zoa and this Flame angel have been through absolute HE double toothpicks.. time will tell if I’m a genius or an idiot for buying an entirely new set up for a single fish and coral. (My brother is the smart one)

I appreciate all the insight and votes. right now it’s looking like people who say they don’t hurt corals has a slight edge although it’s still pretty close to 50-50.

i have had 3 flames in 3 different tanks and zero damage. i am actually toying with the idea of a flame harem. single male and 3 females if I can find someone to supply the females. I have the male

Dwarf angels start out female and the dominant one turns male.

Mine is a big bully to other fish but doesn't bother coral right now.

I believe I am highly lucky, but my flame angel is a model citizen.

I did purchase it from a mixed reef tank where he was not bothering any corals... I would try to do that if you want to acquire one and have a good experience.
