HAPPY NEW YEAR R2R Family!

As we say goodbye to another year let's say goodbye to all the mistakes and focus on what we got right, how we grew, our greatest accomplishments! Reefing takes a back seat and pales in comparison to real life but this is a reefing forum so for now let's talk about our greatest accomplishments in 2019 as a saltwater reef aquarium hobbyist! So my questions to you today are as follows.

1. What would you consider your greatest reefing accomplishment in 2019?

2. How did you grow to be a better hobbyist in 2019 and what could you do different in 2020?

My tank will OFFICIALLY be 1 year old after the crash and rebuild on New Year’s Day. Sps is looking good and starting to get some great color, the type you see in the pictures. Puts a big ole smile on my face.

Now I need to maintain this equilibrium in 2020.

Finally got my 120 up and running in June. Oh and got my 45 frag tank running too. Took me a year to get everything before set up on the 120. 45 went much quicker as I had everything but the tank.
It will be interesting to see what they both look like this time next year.
Happy New Year.

1. What would you consider your greatest reefing accomplishment in 2019? Well...most everything is still alive! :) (Greatest thing for a newbie).

2. How did you grow to be a better hobbyist in 2019 and what could you do different in 2020?

I have been reading, reading and reading some more
Thanks R2R for all the info. (And PaulB for his incredible book, perfect for newbies like me)

My tank has only been up for a year, so pretty much every major accomplishment happened this year. I got fish, corals, my urchin, and a qt to name a few.

My biggest reefing accomplishment in 2019 was the difference that I was able to make as a volunteer at MACNA. A big thank you to @James Kanouff for making that possible for me! I encourage everyone to look for ways to volunteer at your local reef club, local/regional/national reef show, here on R2R, sharing frags with others, or any other similar way that you can engage others in this space!

My biggest accomplishment was finally getting my fuge/grow out area settled, standardized, and organized. This made me a better reefer by being able to better acclimate new zoas and drastically cut issues.

For 2020 I think I'm pretty dialed in. Between automation and the tank being relatively 'complete' I can now spend more time watching the fish with my daughter and less time with my hands in the aquarium.

My biggest accomplishment of 2019 was getting back into the hobby after a 10 year absence. My accomplishment goal for 2020 is to fine tune everything and sit back and watch my tank mature.

My greatest accomplishment is 2 part. 1. Getting rid of my algae int the DT thru nutrient balance. 2. Keeping a Tang alive until it out grew my tank and I had to re home it.
In 2020 I hope to stay active in my local reef club and help others that are struggling (where I can).

I started an Acro dominate tank. The end of 2018 a local reef farmer asked me what my favorite Acro was. I told him I had never wanted a SPS dominate tank until I saw the WD. Said I had been changing the 75 gal and monitoring the numbers to make sure I was stable. Should be ready by the first of the year. He reached in his frag tank and gave me a small WD, “Happy Birthday”.

After the initial panic subsided (“please don’t die, please don’t die,) I got into the swing of things in an Acro tank. It has been a challenge testing my knowledge and pushing my limits but the reward is real.

The controller that I thought was luxury became my best friend. Testing is more precise as I learn the growth = increase demand for ALK/CAL/MAG/Trace/food cycle. In fact I do not think any thing is static like in a mixed reef. Make a change and demand changes. Change skimmer to outside air, PH rises, so does consumption. The move from frag to colony - mind blowing.

The “language” of Acros is a real struggle.

End of 2018 and year later

Mine just happened. I serviced my generator and got it running without knowing anything about small engines. The power has been on and off for the last 3 days but now I'm replying to this thread on my desktop computer and my tank has it's lights on and the pumps, skimmer ect going. Doesn't look like I will loose anything and I accomplished a repair job I never in a million years thought I could do.

For next year I'm going to get a secondary backup power supply as well as get some other backup backup stuff. While I have an extra return pump I'm going to get one more in case 2 fail, more extra heaters ect.

#1 - Greatest accomplishment of 2019 - moving two tanks a 120 & 65 from a 3 story townhome to our new home - in 5Gallon buckets. (I had no help) Only loss - tuxedo urchin.

#2 - I started with SPS in 2019 and plan on fine tuning that also setting up a frag tank for 2020.

Have a safe & Happy New Years!

My tank finally stabilized after a couple of years. I am algae and Dino FREE, fish are healthy, as are my growing corals! I have entered the phase of really enjoying my tank day in and day out!:) Thanks to the many R2Rers who have provided advice along the way!!

I plan to keep my hands out of the tank in 2020 and just enjoy it.
