Mine started as two heads it now has about 24 heads. I have four 'possibles', I think. The first is flow but I don't think that is it because I moved it to a different location temporarily and it did not seem to improve, second is light, that is possibly contributing so I'm going to play with it some. I think the most likely is disease because it didn't seem to ever completely recover after I lost the two indo torches. The other possible is parameters. I was going to test them today but got busy with cleaning up all of the removed gear. My wife is currently doing a 2.5% water change. When she is done I may try to pull my alk, nitrate, and phosphate readings and change the positioning of the colony. Six or seven of the heads are not receiving as much light as they were. It is not splitting.
Thanks for getting me thinking about it. The birdsnest looks more like mechanical damage than STN once I looked more closely. It did get knocked off the rocks when I had the two gyres on about two weeks ago and could have sustained damage then. In my experience a damaged birdsnest does not heal well. I might end up fragging it.
