72L x 24W x 17H = 127G
72L x 24W x 24H = 180G

I'm planning my next tank, fish only, I know for sure I want a 6ft long tank. The two dimensions above are what I'm mostly looking at.

On one hand I like the 127G dimensions because I don't want a super tall tank, I'd much rather it be longer and wider than taller. I am planning on putting aggressive and venomous fish in there so I want to avoid sticking my hands in the water as much as possible. This means I'll be limited on CUC as well, so I'll mostly have to take care of the sand bed myself. I can't seem to find a siphon that has a tube long enough to reach down 24 inches without putting my hands in the water.

But there are several fish I would like to get that usually have a tank recommendation size of 180 gallons, and I wonder how much it actually makes a difference if the length and width are the same and it's just 7 inches shallower. I wonder if these recommendations are based more on cube aquariums rather than long aquariums although I'm sure water volume is also taken into consideration.

Some of the fish I am considering that recommend more than 125 gallons: Blue tang, boxfish, humu triggerfish, niger triggerfish, porcupine puffer, tassle filefish. I know all these fish don't go together.

Would these fish really be worse off in the 127G vs the 180G with the dimensions above?

I know there are plenty of disagreements on recommended tank size but I would like to avoid putting in fish that would do poorly in an inadequate tank size.

@4FordFamily - what do you think about these two options for a fish-only system with large fish?
