HI All, I know this isn't Reef related but thought I would see if you folks could help.

New project is a 165gl/with 55gl sump FOWLR setup ( sump will be another 30gl of volumn)
this tank will have live sand, and plenty of Rock (at least 100lb but probably closer to 130) it will also have some artificial corals in it.

I am probably 2-3 months away from first fish going in but want to start planning a bit. REALLY undecided as to my direction of tankmates so am wide open to suggestions and even a completely new list, actually the more the better.
Here is my first thoughts of a tank setup - again, I am open to any and all suggestions.
we have been wanting Puffers for a while so I would like to see if they will fit or not. if they are going to restrict many, many other tankmates please let me know as I have no problem squishing the idea. BUT here is my first list

Dogface Puffer
Blue Spotted Puffer - research tells me they will co-exist (thoughts on this)

Flame Angel
Lemonpeel Angel - will these 2 co-exist (and obviously I need to know if any of the fish listed will have problems with each other)

Scopas Tang
Kole Yellow Tang
Lavender Tang

Lyretail Wrasse

Goldhead Goby

now I must say our family with 6 grandkids and us being Foster Parents
we love to have a full and active tank with MANY fish in it. so if this all works together, can I add more? how many more? any suggestions would be helpful.
we want this to be a point of attraction in the family room.

Thoughts and recommendations and remember if you want to give me your own list PLEASE DO.....

look forward to seeing whats on your mind..

I'm not sure on the angels maybe someone from the #reefsquad can help on that one. On the tangs, it looks like you have 2 zebrasoma tangs. I'd recommend that you keep them in odd numbers (so instead of 2, add a 3rd one) to help keep aggression down. I also would add the tangs all at once (probably the same for the angels) since that will keep you from having some that are established and others that are the "new kids" (again this helps cut down on aggression). HTH

Also, definitely start a build thread so we can follow the progress!

The two angels are both dwarf angels and may fight with each other. I wouldn't suggest this.
The tangs are a zebrasoma, bristletooth and acanthurus. So while they should get along fine, be sure you QT all your fish. The Lavender tang may have issues without it. Not sure about the puffers or mixing them with the wrasse or goby.

Thanks for all this info. Please keep it coming.
First, absolutely a big Yes in qt,ing every fish. I have raised Discus for the past 10 years, completely understand the importance. I do have a 125 fowlr up and running for about a year now and all went thru proper qt. Thanks

So maybe bannister thought I meant it was a yellow tang, it is in fact a kole yellow eye and it sounds like these 3 should work with proper qt and adding them at the same time.

So I will scratch the lemonpeel and go with the flame, can I add a large angel? Which one?

Really interested in remarks on the puffers.

Any thoughts to add to this list, active and many is what we're striving for

The two angels will be fine in that sized tank, though I do recommend adding them simultaneously.

The tangs will be fine together aswell, but, again, add simultaneously.

The two puffers will be fine, but just get the blue spot before the dogface, and try to get as small of a dogface as possible. The puffers will likely pick on the goby.

The lyretail wrasse will be very active.

this is awesome news. Thanks TJ and PLEASE stay tuned to this thread as I have many questions.
I want to put a completed list together before I buy the first fish so I don't have any surprise additions down the road and add everything in proper sequence.

I will eventually put a new list out with what I think should be the proper sequence for all to review and make changes.
BUT lets first finish the stock list. obviously please let me know when I would be fully stocked. I do want to go on the heavy side of stocking
(I am not afraid of the maintenance to keep the system running proper)

So with the original post of fish all confirmed,
my next additions are as follows

1- Xanthurus Cream Angelfish (Apolemichthys xanthurus) if dropping the Dogface puffer and adding another small puffer like the blue spot would help
I am willing to do this (recommend another puffer please if that's the case)

2 Maroon Clownfish (Premnas biaculeatus)

Lyretail Anthias (Pseudanthias squamipinnis) 1 male and 3 females

Thoughts on these to go with the list??

Each tank's bioload is different, so you will have to be the one that ultimately determines when stocking is complete. Add fish slowly and test parameters frequently.

The cream angel is a bit delicate to handle the rest of the stock. Everything else looks fine.

I have found flagfins and scribbled are decently hardy without getting too big.

@eatbreakfast , with the Lyretail wrasse on the list does this limit me in no more wrasses? if not, what can I do with wrasses? do I need to stay with the same species, can I have several , please elaborate.

Bummer, seems the flagfin is tricky on its eating behaviour and the scribbled is a bit pricey.
I haven't had too much trouble getting the flagfin onto frozen food.

Lyretails are pretty aggressive toward other wrasses. He will prevent you from getting most other wrasses.

Ok, that's what I thought. I may take a leap of faith on the Flagfin and see what happens.

Get the flagfin before the dwarf angels. Other than that, looks good.

Wow, I would not have thought that at all.
super, I will just switch their positions on the list and put the dwarfs with the Blue spot
and the flagfin with the foxface and hawfish.

will the 29gl be a large enough qt??
