I have decide that its now time to start a thread for my new build!

I recently bought a used 30 gallon cube Oceanic glass aquarium to replace my potentially leaky Aqueon 26g bow front aquarium that has been set up for the past 3 years. This was my first attempt at a reef tank and I wanted to do something a little different. I created a foam wall. I saw a thread on a foam wall before I set up the tank and knew that’s what direction I wanted to go.

I have since created a thread detailing and highlighting the do’s and don’ts of creating your very own foam wall. So technically, this will be my third foam wall build. I decided not to make this one as in depth as the other two regarding how its made, so I have included both links if you are interested in learning more.

Any and all questions are welcome via any of the three threads!

30 cube Build

This tank has a fun story!

I determined the 26g had a slight leak, but I had no idea where it was coming from. Slight as in the bottom plastic rim randomly collecting water. Not sure where it was coming from or if it was the hob skimmer overflowing.. don’t know.

This prompted my search for a new tank.

I had been searching the Craigslist for a tank when I stumbled upon a drilled Oceanic 30g cube that came with a 10g sump, return pump, Reef Octopus nw10 skimmer, UV sterilizer, trickle filter and a couple pumps. A stand was also included although in rough shape.

Here’s the fun part!

I live in Lynchburg, Va and the tank I found was located in Richmond, Va which is about a 2 hour drive one way. I really didn’t want to have to drive 4 hours to get it and bring it back, sooo I flew there to pick it up and bring it back!

For those who don’t know, I am a flight instructor and what better way than to have my student fly me, especially since we were going to KRIC anyways. The guy and his son selling the tank were only able to meet the evening we had planned ahead of time and when the time came, a big storm was starting to roll into Lynchburg from the West (Richmond is to the East). There was some heavy precipitation and thunderstorms that were soon to hit and my student and I decided to go for it. We split the tasks during the preflight and got the plane started and ready to go in record time, got our taxi clearance, and we were able to takeoff and head towards Richmond with the big storm behind us!

We made it to the airport as planned and we were able to get a crew car (free courtesy car offered by the General Aviation building we parked at). We got the Mercedes instead of the Honda! We then drove to the predetermined parking lot where I met the man and his son, who’s tank it was, inspected the tank and equipment, paid, and started loading it into the Mercedes. Then it was time to load the stand into the trunk... It didn’t fit! We ended up leaving the stand behind since it didn’t fit and we had doubts it would even fit in the plane. We drove off with a smile on my face and got something to eat before returning to the plane. I asked the receptionist when we got back if I could drive out to the plane to load a fish tank and she said yes with a smile. I’m sure that was a first. We managed to cram it through the doorway behind the front seat and set in the rear seat of a Cessna 172 for the flight back. All the other equipment and the sump went in the rear baggage area and off we went!

Fast forward a month with the tank sitting on the floor in my small 450 sq ft house... my wife wanted the accumulating pile of fish stuff to move off the floor. SO what was my solution? MOVE! haha

It was about time for us to move into something bigger anyways. Now we are renting a 2 bedroom house with a full basement! It’s going to be nice having a washer/dryer, driveway, and central heat/air. We’re almost completely moved in now and the fish room/spare bedroom without a bed, is starting to get organized, well.. I still have fish stuff everywhere all over the floor :D

12/15
The move was definitely sketchy... I ended up getting most coral removed from the wall of the 26g and into baggies or directly placed into one of the three 5g buckets for transport. I couldn’t get the RBTA’s to let go so they ended up dangling for over an hour out of the water. I would try to splash them to keep them wet periodically. Being 30 degrees outside didn’t help! I put it into high gear when I started loading all the live critters into the back of the 4Runner. Then the 10 min ride to the new house and the scramble to get everything inside and wet again. The RBTA’s were cold and very dry when I sat the tank on the floor of the spare bedroom. I then dumped the 15g in with the bags of coral. I now had to quickly mix 10g of new saltwater for the remainder of the tank (nems still out of water). I finally got everything set up temporarily and everything, including the nems, made it and have bounced right back!

The stand has been redone and upgraded with a plywood backing and a new rear extension fame in the back. I bought a used Radion G2 with upgraded G3 Pro pucks and the RMS mount for the 30 cube. It barely fits behind the drain/return lines.

The 30 cube has a custom overflow installed new by an aquarium shop in Richmond that the guy I bought it from, bought brand new along with all the equipment

I decided to ditch the trickle filter for a filter sock. I tested the flow with the UV sterilizer to see if I reduced it any and to my surprise, it didn’t. I am running two 3/4” discharge nozzles up top and my MP10 on the right side.

This time I decided to foam directly through the eggcrate to the glass as opposed to foaming the eggcrate outside of the tank, trimming it, then re-installing it. I still siliconed where the foam meets the display glass all around to keep critters from picking away at it, etc. I also made a special 6” deep sand bed in the back right corner for hopefully a garden eel! I put a bunch of shells at the base of it so Snappy, my Caribbean pistol shrimp, doesn’t try to make it through to the DSB..
I used Great Stuff Pond and Stone that was $8.74 on Amazon.

9aa5d09e6adad30ace50cc04f05495b9.jpg

I also used black aquarium safe silicone this time. It MUST be aquarium safe. It took me months to figure out why I couldn't keep anything alive in the 2.5g until I found a tube of old silicone in the closet and decided to check the instructable thread and sure enough, there was a picture of the non-aquatic silicone being used!
One more reason why a build thread is helpful.

I threw on some fine Charleston beach sand after foaming while it was still wet and finished it off with brushing contact cement on the dried foam and tossing a mix of CaribSea sand and Charleston sand for texture and color.

I added RO water for a couple days to flush it out, then repeat for a few more days, then got it salty.

Leak test

If you have any questions, fire away! I'll be updating the thread as the tank progresses and I’m open to any suggestions.

Here is the new screen top I made with screen door parts from Lowe's.

This is the eggcrate frame I made for the wall all set in place. They are held together with zipties.

Adding lace rock for a more realistic looking wall.
I decided to foam directly to the tank glass this time.

Wear gloves! I knew better, but didn't have any and wanted to get to foaming! This stuff doesn't want to come off for days.

In the bucket is some very fine beach sand from Charleston, SC that I mixed with some CaribSea live sand that I used to coat the wall after brushing on some contact cement with a cheap paint brush. The contact cement helps to seal the foam, but not completely since I brushed it on lightly. Mostly just to get the sand mix to stick for added texture.

I apply the contact cement in small, manageable areas, then toss the sand mix over the wet area by hand.

I had some crushed coral sand laying around from the last tank that I'll be using in the new cube.

To hide the ugly eggcrate on the sides, I used some 5% window tint from Walmart for a clean, blacked out look.

I reworked the stand I had been using for the past 3 years with the old tank.

The rear of the stand was a cardboard sheet, which to my surprise, was a major part of the structural integrity of the stand.

62bbf32bd288462bb3929c8b7a4037a6.jpg

After removing it, the stand was very loose and would sway 6" left to right. I replaced it with a ¼" thick 2' x 4' sheet of plywood, painted it, nailed it back, and now it's super straight and even more solid than before.

eb6045b07a3824ad5865926f5f67c483.jpg

I cut out port holes for access behind the tank and for equipment to enter/exit.

I also built a larger rear brace for the added depth on the next 30 cube using 2x4's and 2x6's and painted it white except for the top which I clear coated to match the stand.

0d0a6236a011c243db3ac4e4ebad2a21.jpg

I then filled the tank with RO water to cycle out some potential chemicals from the contact cement, foam, and sand dust.

2b9e06afdeeba35092fb0da0232cea18.jpg

I then drained and refilled it a couple times before adding salt.

Next on the list was to start the plumbing for the sump!

12/20
Got most of the plumbing figured out. Gotta return some PVC fittings and buy a few 45° elbows and I'll be set to start gluing it!
The new sump layout is better than I had it set up in previously posted pictures. Even less mess, and I thought it looked good before. Lol

I might add a baffle or two now that I've created more room in the sump.

Got all the plumbing done! Minus the gluing, which I've decided to pretty much just glue all of it.

ce021aeff25e4f7f080c95eadd9580d5.jpg

I started the cutting using my jig saw, but it wasn't cutting as clean as I was hoping. I then whipped out the oscillating tool and it worked much better. Easier to reach the tighter spots.

Still gotta mount the timer, mp10 controller, and ATO.

I set up the plumbing so I can shut off both the return and drain lines and open the crossover to recirculate the sump if I want to clean the display, etc. Also if something happens, each line can be shut off independently.

I found this sock holder on eBay for only $10 and it's really nice solid acrylic that comes in either clear or black.

https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https://www.ebay.com/ulk/itm/112245252417

Plumbing is all done and no leaks so far. Standpipe is very loud, but went back to Lowe's to make a durso for it.
Not enough flow from the return nozzles with the tall head height. Soo, I ended up buying ½" loc-line nozzle reducers and a bigger pump.

a71305e13d545a17d7abd5094152f05b.jpg

Bought anew rio+ 2500 pump on eBay for only $35 so that helped.
I currently have a Rio+ 1700 that came with the setup. It's rated for 642gph, but 180gph with a 6ft head. The new one is rated for 782gph, which isn't much more, but 375gph with a 6ft head which is more than double the current flow.
I don't need it to blast the crap out of everything because that's what I've got the mp10 for. Lol
One nozzle is for surface agitation and the other as a crossflow to hopefully randomize some flow with the mp10. I'd rather have too much flow and be able to reduce it with the ball valve than not have enough.

I went to Lowe's and picked up some more pvc fittings to make my durso standpipe. Very easy and straight forward. I added a little piece of eggcrate to prevent a hermit from venturing up into the drain and finished it off with painting the cap black. Just enough room!
It's unbelievable how much quieter it is. It went from loud, echoing gargling to barely a faint trickle.

Got just about all the electrical wires and equipment transferred to the new tank. Just needed to buy Velcro stickers.
I spent a few hours, like 3, organizing and strategically routing all the power cords this evening.
Also stuck a light on top for fun!

Went to Lowe’s to pick up the Velcro and zip tie stickers.
All the power cords are tucked and routed to make anyone with OCD happy. Lol

Still needed to determine how and where to place the ATO reservoir in addition to where to hide the emergency bubbler tubing.

The bubbler, timer, and mp10 controller are attached to the walls with the Velcro stickers and the mp10 power cord is attached with the zip tie stickers.

I got a little carried away after about 2 weeks of cycling. Lol

93d9305f2d0dd8bbf72e5e4412b1e992.jpg

I ended up putting a plug of burning magician zoa’s, green digitata, stylophora, and rock flower nem. Plus 2 thin stripe hermits and a nassarius snail. Lol

So far the hermits are roaming trying to eat clean gravel, the snail isn’t having a seizure, and all the coral looks happy and opening up!

I got carried away again and added more coral and a fish a few days later.

I hand caught the clown. Lol Scooped it right up - I can’t tell you how much more I like this clown than the two a**hole clowns I had prior! And it had really colored up nicely living in the nem. It has a real pretty gradual fade from bright orange up to a dark orangish/black that even comes down its head.

Stylo - gotta find the magic placement; this one is very picky! It’s more of a brownish now. Should turn purple and green again soon

Just about done moving everything over!
Got the damsel and blenny transferred a couple days ago. Also found one crab. Only things left are the other crab, the pistol shrimp, and toadstool leather. The other rbta, green zoa’s, xenia, and remaining monti spongodes still needs to be removed as well, but not a priority since it’s not going in the new tank.

The blenny just looked at me like I did it wrong by netting and transferring it to the new tank. Lol It sat there up front for 10 to 15 min staring at me with those big eyes. Haha

Got just about everything either glued or puttied in place. A few extra green digi and birdsnest frags left over.

Lastly, we got a dog! Cooper [emoji4] My wife found him at the shelter and he has a great personality. Little 3yo dark brown pit mix.

Fish update!

The 26g is almost gone. Ripped the wall out and cut off the remaining coral attached to the wall last night and removed Snappy. The big rbta finally gave up without any light for the past week and it moved to the wall for easy removal.
The 26g has been running with no filtration for the past 2 months on the floor with no issues. Just a power head and 25w heater.

Everything is placed and looking good in the 30g. The plate coral hasn’t been looking too good and I think it’s been getting too much light, so I moved it to the back corner. The burning magician zoa’s are bleaching out which led to this determination. The plate coral is looking better today.
Probably gonna turn the light down a little.

Today, just sold some coral to a local guy!
Also moved the plate coral back out front since it’s not looking much better and is losing some color being in the back corner. Don’t know what the issue could be..

Everything else is looking great though!

New fish! Got it last week and had to drain it out of the overflow a few days ago. Lol
I also got a sweet metallic green brain coral frag for $6 too.

You should ask him! Haha

There nothing quite like flying a small plane.

You’re welcome :). I’ve always loved the look of a rock wall. I had one in my column tank for some time. mine was not hand made, it was the Fluval Ebi backgrounds. So not as nice.

Tank update:

This is what the tank has looked like for the past 3 weeks due to pure laziness..

Tank progress update:
Skimmer has been off for the past month because it was overflowing and I gave up on it.
So, no filtration, other than the uv sterilizer and filter sock. The sock lasts about 4 days before it’s overflowing.

The cotton candy-ish algae I had has since gone away, so algae free.

Had to dial back the light due to bleaching and will probably have to dial it back some more.

My big 6” rbta made it out of the soap dish, thank you urchin, and puréed itself into the mp10. It was too late and there was just a big chunk left stuck, blowing in the current. Left it and pulled the overflowing sock. So much for nems nuking a tank... no skimmer or water change after and wouldn’t have noticed one way or the other.

Yellow clown goby is a goner, due to me giving up on it. Lol I had “saved” it at least 3 times after swimming into the overflow. The 4th time I told it to kiss my a** and left it. Haha (plenty of food flows through-I’m not inhumane..) checked a few days ago and couldn’t find it.

Plate coral is holding in there. Looking better than before, but still rough.

Fried two usb fans plugged into the surge protector USB ports before realizing they are fast charge 2.1a ports.. gets a little moist in the cabinet.

Everything else looks happy and doing well.

Haven’t even been to my LFS in over a month!

Look at these rednecks... two women; one with a beer in the cup holder of the riding mower pulling the other in the trailer. Lol

Flew to Norfolk, VA last week over the water. Pretty cool seeing the sand waves through the water.

(this pic isn’t edited, looked exactly like that out of the window!)

Cooper and the dog barrier I built to keep him from jumping over the back seat and messing up the leather. He now gets to run around and hang out with me in the yard without the leash since he has proven he can be trusted. [emoji4]

Beautiful pics, especially the one with the sand waves. And cute doggo too! Hate to hear about the nem and the goby too but I can understand the frustration.

Thanks, LadyMac and mdbannister!

Gotta start looking for a new fan idea and replacing the internals of the led box light over the 2.5. Found a big bristle worm in it yesterday! Hopefully that was the only one and it’s now swimming in the Lynchburg Sewer system. Lol

Going to be re-doing the water reservoir stand too at some point to be less rickety and less of an eye sore.
