Woah!!! Never seen that one before!
I saw it whilest researching an id for someone elses eel and found it pretty cool, but I never expected to find it now haha, when the lfs sent me the upcoming stock list it was written has a *banded moray* i expected it to be a echidna polyzona (the picture you sent) but I was indeed surprised! My first reaction after seeing it was *it looks familiar*

He was indeed in a different tank temporarily since I was treating him for a infection most likely due to injury with the rocks, I did put him back expecting him to heal up, but later on i just had to watch his last breaths, atleast I had a chance to let him die in my hands it was painful, though I am glad that ghost was saved in time

Teared quite a bit, reminded me of the times where he wouldn't eat from anything but my hands, he was the same eel who survived a bite from my Tess, just wished i had gotten out of bed sooner

Awful :( I had an electrical outage and my whole tank died one morning (in summer with no AC). That was awful. I felt the same way :(

That's hard to bear, you're quite strong to move on from that, but I am glad that to know that you did not give up, as much happiness this hobby brings i believe there's also times we regret being in this hobby

I got into contact with a fishery in Sri Lanka and asked him if he had any eels, he sent me a video of this eel which I found really astonishing, i never knew such an eel existed or i couldn't even come close to finding something as close

@Slocke
@ISpeakForTheSeas
I am sure you both will have fun figuring this one out!
I don't recognize it offhand, but that is a very pretty and unique eel (and I feel like I've seen this species somewhere before, but I can't remember where).

The closest I know offhand based on the body pattern is a coldwater species, Enchelycore anatina, with a visibly different pattern on the head (and that species has two different "morphs" which evidence suggests are likely actually two separate species, E. anatina and E. sanctaehelenae, only one of which - to my current understanding - would have the body pattern similar to this).

Anyway, I'll be putting this on my list of ID's to research some more, but does the shop know where it's from, and could you get detailed info on its teeth?

I believe that it's a fangtooth due to the elongated mouth though i doubt that he will give me more information since I am currently am not buying that eel, but I believe that it was collected near Sri Lankan waters since their branch is so closeby to the beach, they are a fishery who imports to different places hence i believe that they only collect species which are native to the area surrounding them

But no wonder that it might be a enchelycore, the price tag being similar to the enchelycore pardalis speaks for itself Lol

Wouldnt the sanctaehelena be a southern Atlantic eel? I may not know my eels but I know my geography

I believe that eels can almost migrate anywhere, I always thought the gymnothorax rueppelliae was a eel mostly found in the indo Pacific such as the red sea or mostly hawai since I did see videos of it being more abundant in hawai, but didn't think to find it closer to the Indian waters

Maybe. But this seems to be an Atlantic and Mediterranean species from my quick research.

I have also sent the video to a jellyfiah expert who is using her marine biology friends. See if they have any ideas

Hum I didnt even consider cold water eels! I was looking at deep water eels in the Caribbean that were kinda close but clearly not the eel. I also would assume its a fang tooth by the head and then that fin on the top as both my pebble tooth eels dont have the fin and round faces where as my fangtooth have that top fin and long snout

Ah, sorry, I should have clarified, but I was rushing too much - I meant specifics on where the different kinds of teeth are in the mouth (though I don't know if they'd be able to easily do so with a live specimen), as the placement of the teeth can be used to differentiate some species (though thinking about it this morning, I doubt that'd be necessary at all given the unique patterning).

Anyway, I'll keep looking and see if I can find a match here.

E. anatina (the currently recognized species) is found in both the Mediterranean and the Eastern Atlantic; depending on which source you consult, it may list one or the other or both.

Yeah, my thoughts were potentially a hybrid of E. anatina (/E. sanctaehelenae) and something else, but it is unlikely (and again, I feel pretty confident that I've stumbled onto a picture of this species before at some point and just can't remember where).

Could it be a new species?
