Another Red Sea Failure...Viewer Discretion Advised

Well, since I am the OP, figured I would share this...so it begins...

Wow! Your brother's Red Sea failed last month. And now your one is seam-failing too!

Given enough time, I think every single Red Sea G1 and G2 seam will fail. What a crap show! This company should be facing a class action by now. Yet, they take zero responsibility! I have stopped using anything Red Sea. Salt, additives, equipment...

Same, I got rid of everything with their name on it. Couldn't stand it.

Yep just replaced my Red Sea reefer g1 350 after my seam started splitting guess I was one of the lucky ones because my tank lasted 9 years but I refused to buy another reefer! A nice Eshopps with M130 with 3/4” glass is in its place now!!

Mine failed in that same corner, luckily caught it before it totally went. Got a UNS 150

As OP, will also provide a quick update. Red Sea sent me out a replacement tank under warranty, but I quickly sold it and setup a UNS 150 as well:

G3 350 replacement tank (replacing my G2, but sold it instead):

My brother's tank (the original video with the failure that started this thread) was replaced with a UNS 150 Peninsula (he picked up the "special edition" color scheme):

We've enjoyed the UNS systems so far!

A LFS’s seam. They still have this tank like this. There is literally water just hanging out in the seam. I do not know how it’s still holding! I press the seam and you can see the water moving around to the bottom of that tank! 🤯😱

It’s a 250g2+ I think.

My LFS has a S1000 that has the top left seam going out like my 525XL did lol.

@Z Burn's Reefing Those uns look really nice! What’s the total volume on those? I went with the Eshopps m130 after seeing the 3/4” glass and bottom eurobeacing and they were running a sale I couldn’t pass up 4th of July! But if they didn’t have that deal going I would have gotten the uns 150

The 150 is a 150 gallons, same one I just got too. Very nice compared to all these partical board brands.

That seam failure is nothing short of a crying shame. 😭
RS has no shame or conscience, it's strictly about $.

So, uh, when you guys sell your replacement Red Sea tanks do you warn the buyers or just tell them it'll look great with their new hardwood floors?
I would be honest and tell them it was a warranty replacement and leave it at that.

I didn't wait for my 300 to fail even though it was still under warranty. I repurposed the stand and sump and now have a 40g breeder with sump.

RSR owner here…for those who upgraded/replaced their RSR are there any tanks where you can still use the RSR stand??
Not really… the RS tanks are metric dimensions, usually a tad shorter than standard imperial dimension tanks… (for example, my R450 is 59.1”x19.7” in footprint… I’m building a nice hardwood and Birch ply 60”x20” stand for it which is designed to be expanded in depth in the event that I ever want to put an imperial dimension tank in the same spot!)

You could modify the RS stand to be a bit larger, though!

40 breeder on a reefer 300 stand and hob plumbed to RS sump. It was about 1/2" short and probably would have been fine since the 40 is a rimmed tank but I added a 3/4" board since I had one here.

An IM20 AIO was nice fit in my reefer 170 stand.

PS I have no intention of going for strike 3!

I sold a brand new replacement tank. Warn them of what? Red seas reputation? I’m confused.

I would say it’s what that post is asking. Simple answer from me nope haha.

I ended up going that direction with the convo and the person that bought my 250g2+ ended up didn’t care, he made his own conclusions about the ordeal. Luckily only paid $1650 for mine, new from the shop, in all actuality I made more. Sold it for 2350 with a used S2 vectra, and a radion xr30 g4. These items were purchased used. I made an extra $300 on my setup I sold haha. I’ll take it.

But if the buyer does not do their homework, I’m not in the businesses of spoon feeding everyone info that is easily researched. Had I not been able to sell it, I might have setup the tank for QT. Haha. It would have been my loss.

yea, I sold him a brand new tank for $800. Maybe that's worth it to him, knowing the G3s could be just as bad? I don't know. I don't think it's my job to try and predict the future for someone else's decision.

The stand was used, so he knew it was a warranty replacement, but we discussed it and he didn't care. I still wouldn't warn them of anything if the display is brand new in the box. That is like a car salesman telling the new buyer the motor could blow in a few years. Certainly, if the specific tank had known defects I was aware of, I would make that clear before selling, but trying to communicate that Red Sea doesn't have the greatest track record to a potential buyer seems a little much....I suppose if the failure rate hits 80+% then maybe, ethically, I'd have to start saying something, lol.
