ATI Straton LED Light - Comments, Review, PAR, Coverage, Discuss...

@AmateurAlchemist excellent comments!

I agree, the assembly could have been made easier by a different use of parts. Getting the pre-crimped wires into the receptacles was a bit of a challenge.

I haven't had any issues with the master/slave relationship. In fact, I have logged into each unit sequentially and used it as the "master" to adjust settings.

Totally agree on a few fronts:
  • The timing (I almost never lose power, so this is not huge, but they should automatically correct their timing).
  • Moonlight - an obvious omission. I want to try coral spawning someday and I will probably have to get another light to simulate moon cycle.
  • Season tables - same here, this is a no-brainer, and will make it very hard to use these for coral spawning.
  • Acclimation mode - an easy add, not sure why it is not in there.
I didnt have any issues getting both of mine onto my wifi and talking. And I have gotten the hang of the app to be able to easily make changes, but it took a bit.

You are right, PAR and coverage and spectrum possibilities are excellent, they just need a few features to be really amazing.

Thanks for posting your thoughts!

So you have master/slave working on your normal wifi network? Is your LAN in the range 192.168.100.0/24, per chance? Did you set them up as master/slave first then change one or both to client mode?

Thank you for the great thread! I've been following this for some time and read every post before purchasing. I know things like the lack of moon phase have been mentioned before but quietly hoped it would have been slipped in with a firmware update for the G2 launch. Soon. Maybe. Hopefully...!

I picked up 2x g2 pro 204s a few days ago for an upcoming build. For context I've been through Red Sea ReefLEDs, Kessil A360Xs and currently run GHL Mitras 7204s.

Initial impressions-

The quality of the fixtures is second to none. Very solid feeling, flawless paint job and clear sheath cables are nice to see. Packaging was clearly sufficient as they arrived in one piece. Instructions were supplied in German only but whatever. Packages included the light fixture, hanging kit, control unit, C13 power cable with correct plug, Meanwell power supply (nice to see, don't reinvent the wheel) and Gebrauchsanweisung.

You have to wire the fixture to the control unit. Instructions are clear enough and wires have crimped terminals but the markings on the wires aren't particularly clear. I setup to test then removed cables again for storage, which was harder than it should have been due to tight tolerances on the connectors. An SP21 connector or similar would have been a better shout here IMO, but no biggie.

I've seen shimmer compared to T5s so was concerned the tank would look flat but it's actually pretty decent. Certainly not Kessil levels of shimmer but it's adequate.

I run lights on the whiter side but wowzers, the pre-canned presets are very white. Even the LPS+ profile is a whitewash. I'll probably start with LPS+ but take whites back to 10, and that's still whiter than I normally run.

They are immensely, insanely, overwhelmingly powerful. At 15% overall intensity and whites knocked back to 10 I was still seeing 100 PAR at 60cm depth with the light (very approximately) 25cm above the water surface. Coverage is, obviously, bananas. If properly sized I can't imagine any scenario where supplemental lights would be required.

And now, unfortunately, the not so good bits. I've seen people mention how bad the software is but a) I work in IT infrastructure. I'm used to clunky, enterprise software and b) I use GHL and for all of it's flaws, really don't find it to be that bad, despite having seen claims that it's unusable; so figured it would be fine. Good gravy, I was in for a shock... The annoying thing is that all of these niggles could be solved in firmware.

It took multiple attempts to flip wifi to client mode. I could see them connected to the (UniFi, FWIW) network but the web portal just wouldn't respond. It took multiple retries (at doing exactly the same thing) to get past that. Once connected they're reliable.

The ethernet port does nothing, apparently. I'm running DHCP and see the MAC but it just never picks up an IP.

The lights came with a firmware dated 2024 but the latest version on ATI's site is from 2023.

As far as I can tell, you have to choose between connecting to a common wifi network and controlling each light individually or controlling both through a single light (master/slave mode) but through the master's wifi network. If I set them up master/slave then move the master to my normal SSID, the slave doesn't follow. If I do janky things and force the slave onto the normal SSID they don't group up again. Logging into each shows them in a group but with one member offline and no way to manually intervene. Come on....

No NTP. So if the power goes out, despite them having wifi, you have to log in to (potentially multiple) lights and set the time again. What a glaringly obvious omission...

No moon cycles. Many lights at a fraction of the cost can account for moon phase.

No acclimatisation mode. I must just be missing this, surely...

The UI is generally, well, Germanic. It works, but it's unintuitive and harder than it should be.

Most of these things are annoyances more than dealbreakers but the sheer quantity of annoyances has me questioning whether they'll be staying. It's easily the most underwhelming experience I've had after dropping over £3k.

If I'm wrong on any of the above, please, please correct me. I want to love these.
@Randy Holmes-Farley I think this is the review you’ve been waiting for.

yes, thanks. Very useful. I doubt they are too white for me and still expect to adjust them less blue, but glad they are closer than most! Hate to waste leds that I'll just turn down. Bright is good. Some of the creatures I'm thinking of thrive nearly exposed to direct sun. No acclimation is unimportant to me since the tank is currently empty and doubt I'd use it later.

The interface issue is concerning. I'd be getting 102's not the 204's, but those interface issues may be the same. I hate IT crap. Machines that don't do what they are supposed to do are among life's substantial annoyances.

I believe the issues are hit and miss for the initial connection stuff.

I thought it might be a good post for you because of the mention of GHL and other lights.

Can’t decide if these are worth an upgrade from a Neptune Sky/Quanta bar combo

This is possibly the least scientific presentation ever, but this is the "natural spectrum 10m" preset straight out of the camera. It's whiter than my normal room lights. At 75% overall intensity, PARwise was reporting 340 PAR ~60cm beneath the light. I'd guess it's around 6000k.

Figured I've paid for and opened the Stratons so I'll give them a go. Turns out I have a beam running parallel to the tank, 3cm from the midpoint of its intended location, so that made life much easier....!

I've never hung lights from the ceiling before. I was and still am bricking it, so setup a nice, soft landing zone.

Plus point- the lack of glare / light spill is the best of any light I've used. I can sit at my desk and look straight up without being blinded.

Negative point- there's a ton of coil whine. This one might actually be a deal breaker. I like my tanks super quiet- current tank sits at 32dB.

Does anyone else have 204s and have noticeable coil whine?

uh oh. Quiet was a big selling point for me and I've not heard of many complaints, but my wife hears and smells things I cannot. lol

On the positive side for me, hanging would be easy as its going inside a half-open backed canopy.

My SO described it as “the kind of noise that drills into the back of your head” and she tends to be less sensitive to annoying noises than I am

I’ve spent the morning packing them up. The last GA firmware update was two years ago, the last beta update was a year ago and is loaded with bugs. Seems ATI have abandoned these before they got off the ground.

The light emitted is great and they seem physically well built but literally everything else is a shambles, especially when factoring in price.

Connectivity is intermittent at best, the software is feature-lacking and buggy (this was barely acceptable on initial release 5 years ago, it sure as heck isn’t acceptable now); and they’re the only light I’ve ever heard of with coil while.

ATI should be embarrassed.

This is literally the first I have heard of any noise with this light. Can we get some comment from other owners?

Assume he is referring to the original model since the current models were not available that long ago. I owned 3 of the original models and had no noise but did feel that the app was a little "glitchy". The 102's that I have now are about as reliable as it gets. Even after a 4 day power outage they picked up right where they left off. No noise at all and the app is great even able to give a PAR reading that adjusts as one adjusts the light intensity. My wife uses hearing aids and even with them turned way up she doesn't hear anything.

They’re brand new pro G2s.

See the below posts. To quote ATI: “ATI Aquaristik does as much as possible to minimize the effects of coil whine in our products, but like any manufacturer, we cannot completely eliminate this phenomenon.” Every other light I’ve owned manages to completely eliminate it… Seems they’re well aware and want to pretend it’s a non-issue.

I have the original Stratons (3 of them over my 6-foot system) and only hear the slightest whine when I put my ear up close to the lights.

The UI is not as easy as other lights, to be sure, but it’s good enough for me and a trade off I’m happy to make for these lights. They look great, are built to last, have incredible coverage (it really is a blanket of light) and gives me the beautiful daylight look I’m after

I’ll add that from everything I’ve read, if the Pro version was out when I setup my tank, I 100% would have gone that route. Not because the OG lights are bad, but because the Pros seem to be an even better version of what was already a great light

Does the sound change as the lighting level changes?

The loudest coil whine I’ve ever gotten (spectrum/intensity dependent) I have to have my ear right next to the units/ballast to hear it. Viewing the tank from 3 feet out, they’re dead silent - the water trickling over the overflow grates is the only sound coming from my tank. He must have a bad unit if it’s that loud.

But in my spectrums I’m using and intensities, mine make no coil noise.
