Hi all,
My wife and i have been keeping aquariums ever since we started dating and progressed to a reef tank 3-4yrs ago, we live in Melbourne Australia and our current tank which is a Red sea reefer 525XL is our second reef with our first being 70cm cube which equated to approx 80gal.
This tank has been running for nearly a year now and so far has had a few hiccups along the way and has been a bit slow to get started but i have to admit some of the lack of success has been due to my own laziness.

The tank is scaped using real reef rock and has a very shallow fine 1-2mm sand bed

Equipment includes:

Lighting:
ATI LED Powermodule 54watt 8 bulbs fixture

Circulation:
echo tech mp40wes
echo tech mp10qd
and an old hydor korallia 3000lph maybe?

Skimmer:
Vertex alpha 170

Return pump:
Ehiem compact 5000+

Water top off:
Tunze ozmolator

Temp control:
2x200watt aqua one heaters run off an external temp controller

Currently only dosing randy’s recipe
Alk, Cal and Mag and using Natural salt water for water changes.

Our tank is a mixed reef with a selection of soft coral, zoanthids, mushroom, lps and sps

Fish stocking is:
1 yellow tang
1 mystery wrasse
1 coral beauty
1 red fairy wrasse
1 blue spot blennie
1 starki damsel
2 percula clown fish

clean up crew consists of a variety of
trochus snails
stomatella snails
hermit crabs
collector urchin

Tank has had its ups and downs in the first year and battled an unknown algae outbreak after the initial cycle which was cleared up using vibrant, however after that i have been fighting outbreaks of cyano that seem to come back every few months.
Fish are all healthy and corals are encrusting and growing however my aim this year is to increase stability and try to improve coral color and obviously increase my coral collection.

Anyway hope you enjoy our tank and i will update with any new additions or changes to the tank.

Aidan and Mary

I do like the clean lines of the Red Sea tanks. What did you use/create to hang the ATI lights? I am about to order a new tank and like the look of that setup.

Sweet setup sir, is this tank on a second floor or has a basement below ?

No it’s on a ground floor concrete slab.

They are cade light hanging arms which is brand available here in Australia they are basically just metal arms with a 90deg bend fixed into the back of the stand. a nice neat way of hanging the light without having a canopy or from the ceiling.

Going to look great once it's grown in guy's :)

Got to get some more coral and work on stabilty and get some better color in the coral, trying to work out how to manage nitrates at the moment without having to increase water changes to much. thinking of either trying to incorporate a fuge or possibly consider carbon dosing.

The short cake from frag day is showing some promise though with the pink becoming deeper and also some green showing through on the base now.

I'm so looking forward to seeing this tank in person in a few weeks
When you get over our way again, you should call in and speak to Dave at Deer Park Aquarium about getting some Coral Essentials to help along your colours in your corals. We noticed a big difference in our tank since we've started using it.

Colors start to be showing improvement since i’ve started to take more care in testing the basics like alk cal and mag and since getting them in line i’m seeing an improvement. Before i was just relying on water changes to replenish them but looks like the tank is finally at the stage where i will need to get setup the dosing pump again and work on keeping them stable, i think nitrates are still on the high side but i will address that problem eventually lol.
I might give something like reef essentials or even the aquaforest components rage a go but for now good old cheap baking soda, damp rid and empsom salts will do the trick.

Thanks, the clowns have grown in the last few years that i’ve has them but haven’t seen them spawn since i don’t have a bubble tip in this tank like i did in the last one. they genrally spend there time in my elegance but are showing interested in my leather now that it’s starting to grow.

So we had the first Marine aquarium society of Victoria’s (masov) meeting for 2018 at our house this afternoon.

Was a good turn out and great to catch up with all the club members with lots of reef chat going on along with chat about our move over to R2R.
Got some good feedback on the tank along with some tips on coral placement from some veterans in the club which will be implemented seeing as coral placement is not my strong point.

On another note i’ve FINALLY dusted off the dosing pump and will be working on dialing in my dosing of alk cal and mag.
I’ve also been hearing great things about a local (aussie) company producing some great trace element supplements which i’m keen to try to get my colors on track.

All in all a great day and looking forward to catching up on some club members tanks this year and hopefully get to see a few new ones as well.

Thanks Dave, im sure there will be another meet down the track. let me know if you’ll be at the next meet and i’ll brinf you a frag to trade for those zoos i got off you last time. My urchin keeps picking them up and running around the tank with them so they aren’t so happy in my tank unfortunately
