Best Hermit Crab?

When buying shells, would you only need to buy them once? Or will the hermits not reuse shells?

I have bought them a few times but that is because my diamond goby burns the empty ones :confounded-face:

Fun fact after working at an lfs for 4 years I have never seen a hermit crab kill a healthy snail and take their shell.
