So we just had our 3rd Christmas of the year this weekend. It was with my in-laws and we always do a dirty Santa gift exchange. For the past 7-8 years I have always done a goofy themed gift. Like a homemade zombie survival kit. Breaking bad franchise kit with los pollos chicken bucket, haz mat suit, respirator, pan of blue meth(blue colored rock candy) etc. last year I let my kids help out. They love to craft and make stuff. We did a game of thrones themed gift. We made a cardboard sword, dragons eggs, my daughter sewed a cape, crown and a hand of the king pin. I usually give a bottle of booze or six pack of beer as the actual gift. Anyways, this year the kids wanted to help again. I was out of inspiration this year so my wife said, “just buy something for your tank. No one else will steal that!” So I started thinking and I bought a hydor power head. We decided to make the box an aquarium. This is what we came up with. Pretty proud of my kids! They did most of it.

I ended up with it. I had little fear anybody else would try to take it. Only reefer in the family. Everyone thought it was great though. Kids were really proud of it.

I had posted awhile back about upgrading my water mixing station. I had bought a couple of 35 gallon hdpe shipping containers back around October. I built a wood hand cart and small stand for them and then there they sat through the holiday season. Well had some time the past few weekends and decided to take a crack at it. Washed the containers out multiple times with water and baking soda. Here’s what I have so far. I’m still waiting to get a float valve and another uniseal.

I have a 40 breeder and stand that I’m getting ready to have set up in about a year. Last November I bought some Marcos rock and the E Marco 400 cement kit. I got around to aquascaping this weekend and cemented my structures together. It’s two separate main pieces that fit together. This way I can move it around easier.

I then put the cemented rock in an extra 20 gallon tank to cure for 2 months. Then I’m going to pre cycle the rock with microbacter7 and occasional feeding. Then I hope to have the new system up in the fall and last I will do a 4 month full tank cycle.

I’m pretty sure I’m going to be running a bare bottom which is one reason for the really long cycle process. That and I fund this hobby on a very slim budget, so it takes me a while to save up for everything that I will need.

A few recent pics. Things seem to really be hitting a stride. Everything seems to be growing and maturing. I find I have to trim my montis about once a month. My green tort also has needed trimming in the back. I also put a pic of our new black ocellaris. I purchased him from a local petco in February. I quarantined him without meds for two and a half weeks before putting him in the display. He seems to be pairing up nicely with my female percula. He’s definitely grown a bit too.

Nice

Those caps can be a challenge once they take off for sure. I know the feeling. I hate to just throw away regular healthy frags but eventually there is no room. Challenge of a successful tank ;).
