which canister filter would you recommend . I have a FOWLR tank and need to replace my cascade canister type filter but it's been a while since i have shopped for one ..what brand name would you recommend?

None. They are nitrate traps......

I would ditch the canister filter and use a sump with a skimmer. The only difference between a FOWLR and a reef is the absence of corals. I have a 120gal FOWLR setup the same way my reef is setup with the exception of powerful lights everything is the same. IMO a powerful skimmer is a must on any fish only tank.

I agree with you on that. I was under the assumption that since he was using a canister filter, he did not have a drilled tank. I do agree whole heartedly about the big skimmer.....

yup lose the cannister and get a skimmer.... if you wanna run the cannister because you have it i would strip the inside of all filters, bio stones etc. and fill it with gfo and carbon... then you got a nice little reactor lol...

I don't see a problem with a cannister filter as long as it's cleaned on a regular basis. I have a fluval 305 that catches a lot of deritus from the tank and I sometimes use if for my chemical needs. It provides the tank with extra flow, cleans it up and is pretty easy to maintain in my opinion.

That was going to be my other question. I use the carbon, phosban and denitrate in the chambers on occasion and was wondering if it was using these as efficiently as a reactor would. My main problem is flow control but the water is essentially doing the same thing by being driven from bottom to top.

Rena XP has worked great for me. I run carbon and bio-chem zorb, rock pieces and those sponge-like pads in a XP3. I DO clean it out every 5 days and sometimes every 3 days. I also run a Deltec protein skimmer. I don't have room for a sump and the h.o.b. refuge I did run contributed a lot of algae to the tank plus lots of pods too. Anyway I'm happy with the canister filter, just keep it clean. I imagine you could fill every tray with rock and coral fragments and skip the other dingster boomsters.

Ahh just it the tank is a 45 or 54 gallon corner bow with no holes drilled for a sump and have been using A canister filter made by cascade it has stopped working and need to replace it but wanted to know if there is a new breed out since this one was put in use 4 years ago. I have alot of live rock in the tank and for the last year just used floss and carbon without issue. But still need to replace it and they have all these fancy digital models out now and was wondering if anyone could help point out the most reliable of what is out there..

Magnum 350 Canister filter doe the big particles just clean
it weekly (make sure you get the quick disconnect kit).
Also if you really want it good run an reverse underground
filter and to get extreme run an algae turf scrubber
I don't even run a skimmer any more since
