I just bought some chaeto about 2 weeks ago and its starting to get what I would call dirty. Other algae is growing on it like hair algae. So how does everyone else keep the chaeto clean or can you.

flip it over so the other side is facing the light. That is all I do.

That's strange - maybe try flipping it like wetwhistle mentioned or even kill the light on it until the hair algae dies and try again

I have some hair algae and other algae on mine. I have no hair algae in my display though. I flip my chaeto over every other day and trim it every 2 weeks.

I would bet that it is because you do not have enough flow going through the chaeto. Put a pump facing it so that it blasts all the debris out and you will not have that problem. Not to mention it will grow twice as fast

I'll try flipping it over. I also have enough flow passing through it. Do pods help keep the chaeto clean; because I thought about getting some. Also some info on my tank. That I have hair algae in my DT that I have been fighting for a couple of months now. I'm trying to get the chaeto to help get the hair algae under control.

If you have hair algae in your display and some are growing in your cheato then using cheato alone for nutrient export will take forever. The hair algae is taking up the nutrients faster than the cheato that's why they are growing everywhere. Do yours gfo or any other nutrient export method? Like carbon dosing and gfo?

  • I use all types of macro. I have crazy pods. And the debris collects in the center of the chaeto, where the flow cannot kick it out. So I "fluff" or stretch the chaeto and the debris goes away. If you have enough flow how does debris sit there?

If you zoom in on the lower right hand corner of the second picture you can see the debris collecting in the middle of the chaeto

I have gfo running and I also just added some matrix seachem, plus the chaeto to try to get the hair algae under control. Also removing it by hand to help the chaeto get the upper hand on it lol.
