cheato trimming

how much excess room should we be giving the cheato to grow? at what point do we call the refugium full and start trimming back?? I want to give the pods as much cover as possible and as much to thrive in but does the cheato reach a point that it slows it's growth due to available room? or is that just a visual perception...

I give my chaeto enough room to tumble with the flow. If it starts getting too big I split it in two; shake one section out vigorously in my return and then give it away.
