Hello,

I'm posting this in the hopes of gathering information and recommendations from the experienced hobbyists on here. I'd like to ask if anyone has any experience with doing hyposalinity treatment concurrent with chloroquine phosphate straight in a FOWLR DT tank. DT is 200G with 50G sump. No inverts, no corals. 5 tangs, moorish idol, 4 butterflyfish, and a pair of clownfish.

Question specifics:

1. Can chloroquine phosphate be added in conjunction to hyposalinity treatment?
2. If yes to question 1, can I use hyposalinity of 1.014 so as to reduce stress on fish?
3. If yes to question 1, how do I go about dosing chloroquine phosphate in a DT with live rock and sand?
4. I have not done hyposalinity before, any useful gems of information or wisdom would be greatly appreciated.

Background information to the problem:

I recently purchased a sohal tang from a LFS that allegedly sells "premium pre-quarantined stock". They told me to put it straight into the DT so as to not stress the fish. I didn't do that but decided to do observation QT for 30 days. Sohal tang was eating well and showed no signs of illness. At end of 30 days did a freshwater dip and put it in. The sohal tang did some serious fighting with some of the tangs immediately in the tank; he gave two of the tangs some cuts but was unscathed himself. Ich the next morning on the sohal tang only. Pulled it out and attempted to treat with cupramine. Ich worsened very quickly, before getting better from cupramine. Sohal tang died after 1 week from hunger strike.

1 week has passed since the attempted introduction of this sohal tang, and now yellow tang is showing about 5-8 spots of ich. As of this time, no other fish are symptomatic. I have been adding polyplab medic at maximum dosage during the 1 week leading up to the infection of this yellow tang.

I know for certain that this display tank was 100% ich free prior to this fish coming in. All fish in the display tank were purchased from a different LFS atroughly the same time and put straight into the display tank with a full course of chloroquine phosphate treatment. There was no sand in the DT at this time, and only a few pieces of rock.

I decided to use cupramine for the sohal tang instead of chloroquine phosphate because the QT was too small for me to accurately measure the amount of chloroqine phosphate (I did not own a miligram scale, and was not able to acquire one from anywhere fast enough).

Removing the fish is not an option. I have only a small QT tank. Removing the rock is also not an option. Best I can do is siphon some of the sand out.

Finally, I am inquiring about this chloroquine + hypo combo because:

1. I now have a significant amount of rock and sand in the DT. If I did not have this, I would have just used chloroqine already.
2. I am not confident in my diagnosis of ich. Could also be velvet. If I was confident in my diagnosis, I would have just started hypo without the chloroquine. Pictures highly improbable, the fish in this tank get spooked into the rocks as soon as my phone goes up to the glass for some reason.

I am new to the marine hobby, and the sohal tang was the first fish I had to use cupramine on. Needless to say, I did not have a good experience with it. He was a food fiend before the cupramine, and went on hunger strike hours after the first cupraime half dose recommended on the bottle. I am not going to risk all the fish in the DT to cupramine.

Thank you everyone in advance for the input!

have you considered using an acclimation box? Might reduce aggression. In my experience, less stress is less disease
Actually I used egg crate to partition part of the tank off for the sohal tang. But the next morning it got access to the rest of the tank somehow. Must have been from the sides where there was still like a 2cm gap. In any case, the sohal tang is now dead, and my concern is with the rest of inhabitants in the DT.

I will definitely follow your advice and try a acclimation box for future additions! The purpose of posting this thread though is whether I can use chloroquine phosphate together with hypo.
