Chrysophytes?! Help me cure it?

Reviving this thread as I have a heck of a chrysophyte outbreak in my 30. Does fluconazole really wipe this stuff out? My nitrate is bottomed our so I’ve been dosing up to 5ppm daily, but if fluc can nuke this quicker I’d rather go that route.

Hey there-I have same problem. Did you end up using fluconazole? If so, did it work?

I had this nasty junk for 2 years...didnt realize it. In fact, I gave up and let my tank sit for about a year ad a half. Did nothibg but auto feed and top off water. Occasionally cleaned the class. Once I finally IDd it, I relaized my issue was actually low nutrients. All that time I assume my rocks were leaching phophate fueling growth. Once I IDd it, I bumped my nitrates up to 5 using pottasium nitrate. It dissapeared in 10 days.

Hey there-I have same problem. Did you end up using fluconazole? If so, did it work?

Ill leave some pics of what I believe is my chrysophyte algae. The first clue it was not Dinos was the fact that under a microscope there was 0 movement.

I have something similar. Sucked it all out of my sump and display and glass. Hasn’t grown back but all the rock is still coated with it. Nothing eats in and trochus snails are dropping left and right.

Do fluc and dose nitrate to keep your levels up. I also dosed phosphate to 0.1ppm

injad chryso for 12 months in my 180 due to zero nutrients- that combo knocked it out on 13-14 days

I did 4.4 grams for my calculated 220 gallons (7000mg in vial for 350 gallon, so (7000/350)*220= 4400Mg). Skimmer off for 72 hours.

I then did a big rock scrub and 40% WC on day 16 (but I put chemiclean in on day 14 to kill cyano also).

I actually forgot to turn my skimmer off when i dosed it 8 hours ago. Turned it off now. You think it will **** the meds up now since it was on?

Hopefully you guys are keeping up with this thread. After ages trying to ID this horrible algae I think it is Chrysophytes. After reading through this thread though I have slightly different circumstances. My nitrates are 20 and po4 is around 0.12. Also I only have it in my refugium and not in the DT. Here is a picture and also a microscope picture.

scope pics looks like chrysophytes. I would not have guessed that from the very dino-looking tank pic.

It does look like dinos but I have looked under the microscope 4 or 5 times taken from different parts and just keep getting those circles

I’m wondering if the big circles are air bubbles and dinos are the smaller ones. I would try to zoom in on the smaller ones.

The magnification is already x1200 and I did have a small amount of dinos six months ago and the microscope showed them up so I don’t think I am missing them.

I'd personally try a 5 day blackout too. Harmless, and I have found it successful on many issues.

yep, that's the situation.

right. brown/tan photosynthetic, motionless dots, beyond the magnification reach of what images dinos - all point toward chrysophytes - they are much smaller.

Was that a scope image of the brown in those long strings? if not could you confirm the long stringy bits are the same?

This is what my chrysophyte looked like in tank, when I sucked it out, and under the microscope. @taricha helped me ID this stuff.

what I tried:
-try and keep NO3@10 and [email protected], but new tank was using up nutrients so needed to dose often.
-suctioning it out daily for weeks: it grew back by next day though.
-adding bottled bacteria: Microbacter7, ZEObac, waste away: no difference.
-fluconazole: seemed to grow less, but did not get rid of it.
-fluconazole + vibrant + nutrients at above level: tank had more good days than bad days.
-Added some live rock (with critters and microbes) and live sand(not the bag from store, but the stinky stuff directly from the ocean): Chryso now seems to be gone.
-I am still dosing nutrients so they don’t return.

The photo of the microscope is from some of the scum that was floating on the top of the water. I have checked the long stringy bits as well though and they looked the same, just lots of those circles. I’ll do another couple of images later and post those too.
