Comparison: Hanna Salinity Check vs TM Hydrometer

Video which compares the Hanna Salinity checker to Tropic Marin Hydrometer. This video is consistent with my experience with Hanna’s salinity checker: Not accurate even when calibrated.

Also compares against the Hydros salinity probe: Does not look reliable whatsoever

I didn't bother watching the video because after owning 2 Hanna checkers I know they aren't accurate when calibrated with Hanna's calibration fluid. Both of mine read 0.002 low. The only way I could get them to read accurately was if i calibrated them with salt water of a know salinty. Even then mine would drift so I just scrapped them.

I went through three Hanna salinity checkers. I still have one since I felt bad having to keep returning them. I went through a bunch of the one-time use calibration solution. Not reliable!

Many people don't believe me, but I have had much more success with the Milwaukee Digital refractometers than any conductivity meter. The Milwaukee's are often not accurate, but they are very consistent. I find them to be consistently 1-2 points off, while a conductivity probe is off to varying degrees at different times, which is far worse IMO.

I must suck at shopping, couldn’t find any cylinder for using the hydrometer in on BRS.

Search "1000ml graduated cylinder" on Amazon. Perfect and useful for lots of other things. $15

Serious Reefs did a far better video testing salinity devices and using a true standard (Randy’s DIY solution)

The Hanna solution is trash. The checker did well in his test but reliability and longevity are tougher to test

Tip for any new comers. Let it be made very clear that a Tropic Marin Hydrometer and the cheap $8 floating glass hydrometers on Amazon are very different. One is precision measuring device the other is a glass tube with a rolled up paper inside that will move up and down when shaked.

I use the TM to verify my conductivity meter. Much easier to use. The difference between the 2 has only been 0.0003.
Not sure why people dont use them more.

If it helps, I bought this one on Amazon. It is 500ml. Works fine, and is plastic.

They do sell them as a package, or at least on the video they said they do

Agreed. This combination works very well. Quick checks with the Hanna on multiple tanks, several times each week or more if wanted. Then a weekly confirmation with the TM to make sure the Hanna is holding steady. If it drifts a little (maybe monthly or longer) it needs a recalibration that takes less than a minute. I use TM known salinity water from my large reef tank to calibrate the Hanna when needed. It works and it is the water that the Hanna will be testing anyway. Much better than the calibration solutions. As mentioned 500ml plastic graduated cylinder works perfect for the TM.
