Conservation & Sustainability, YES! Total Ban, NO!

Aloha,

I just received word that Senate Bill 580 will be heard this coming Thursday. This bill is, plain and simple, a complete statewide ban on the aquarium industry.

The hearing will be at 1:15 PM, at the state capitol (room 225).

It's critically important that we attack this bill as hard as we can right now. If it passes out of this committee it'll give our opposition time to publicize the issue and make our lives that much harder. Everybody NEEDS to come to this hearing!

Also, everybody needs to:

- Call the office of Senator Dela Cruz and say that you're opposed to SB580. The phone number is 808-586-6090. Do this right away!

- Prepare written testimony against the bill. The deadline is 24 hours before the hearing, so this needs to be done by Wednesday afternoon. However, attending the hearing in person is far more important than written testimony and carries much more weight.

- Get everybody you know (friends, family etc.) to do the same thing! The more the better.

I'll update as things go along. Just to let you know there are 5 more bills to be presented in the very near future. We need everyone's help.

It's not the politicians... They have to present bills. Its part of their public service duties. This is the work of Snorkel Bob.

This is not only about our hobby and money. This is about families and their livelihoods. This is the about the LFS in hawaii, two of which have been in business for over 40 years. This is the difference of a roof over people's heads or living on the beach. This is about the cloths on my daughter's back and the food in her stomach.

This is a ban, this is not work toward any kind of conservation or sustainability efforts.

Everybody has a right to their opinion. Opinions are not to be taken personal. As i have mentioned on this forum and on others on this matter... I am not against conservation. I am against an all out ban.

This is crazy! Why do they want to disrupt peoples lives? This trade is one that regenerates itself and poses no threat to anyone else . I do not understand why they are continuing to try to pass bills like this that kills peoples lives. What ever we can do , let us know. We are here.

The they you are talking of is Snorkel Bob of Snorkel Bob's snorkel gear. He is claiming that this trade is removing all the fish from the reefs.

No it goes to committee really soon.
Actually this Thursday, Feb. 3rd, 2011.
Hopefully lots of people voice their opinion and/or show up for the hearing.

I just spent 3 months over there in Hawaii this summer and thought about taking a snorkeling tour with snorkel Bob and now I am GLAD I didn't contribute to his business. His statements are ridiculous! His boats and tourists do as much damage to the reefs and fishes as collection does! All he is doing is to protect his interest (business)!

What does he do or what has he done, thats what im asking. I mean i dont know what he has done but wouldn't you try and protect your livly hood?
