Definitely not cyano (at least on the sand). How old is the tank? It could just be regular diatoms and algae that every newer tank gets. But I'm guessing it has been up for a while?

It’s been set up for around 14 months.

the reason am asking was this: handy to keep in the back pocket. of course all practical means first, but what tank surgery can do is slick neat hard work. strong potential backup for when things get worse, the #1 thing we thought could not be safely done has now been done 200 times here's one matching your reefs size.

zapping them clean by work is also an option
