I have been on R2R for a few months now, and I have to say, the people on here are the best! I come from a motocross family and even with the competition on the track, here on the reef, everyone looked out for others off the track. So, I had a SW tank years ago and it was a basic tank with a couple of rocks and a few fish, but gave it up when I went overseas with the military in 2004. Now I am giving it a go again, trying to learn all the new tech and systems to be successful. Anyway, here goes my long drawn out build post...hope I don't bore you too much.
I started this tank as a 60 gallon, but realized I should have started with the tank I could actually fit and grow into it which leads me to this 150 gallon build. My first attempt with the 60 was going good, put a bunch of SPS, LPS, and a few fish initially, but my house sprung a leak in the roof after one of our super great winter storms last year and by the time I caught it, it had wrecked rooms all over the house. Fast forward a year and a complete renovation (homeowners insurance wasn't happy ;Greedy), I am back with a 150. Was able to save the contents, and things were going good, but as a Disney lover and father of 2 kids, we went on vacation to Disney in FL this past February. I angered my wife and spent a bunch of money leading up to vacation setting up an Apex, doser, Kessil A360WE lights, and the lunar lights so I can keep an eye on things through the Apex and my cameras of my security system. Was through the 9th day of the 12 day get away when I hear the water leak alarm through the camera. Panicked, I call my brother to go over, and he finds out when we lost power during a snow storm while I was gone, the generator that takes a few seconds to turn on automatically through a transfer switch, was just enough to shut the return pump down, somehow lost the flow on the drains and overflowed the tank onto my new hardwood floors. When I get home a few days later, all my SPS has tissue necrosis and were either dead or almost dead. Immediately tested the water, all good, have no idea why it happened. Anyway these are the photos of the build, when I remembers to take photos. It starts with the 60, then goes into the 150. I'm sure you'll be able to tell which is which. Thanks for looking!

Kids thought it was fun, dog keeping guard, and the need for wire management. This last 2 pics are my DIY aluminum brackets for the Kessils that adjust in height and length for better positioning, and I attached them to the back of the stand (not fun), and then after the crash, and removing some rock to rebuild it different.
Thanks again

Thank you! I wanted to do it in the same wood as our kitchen cabinets (rustic hickory) because I love the knotty wood, but after looking at the cost of 4x8 sheets of it, I stuck with the beat up warehouse wood my uncle donated, then sanding it to get the dirt and marks off before painting. I figured white would be acceptable to the boss too! LOL

That's why I did a few things myself to minimize the cost, specially when you are on a budget.

Yea, cost was ... and still is ... an issue in my house because my wife lost her job after 19 years when the owner got greedy and sold everything abruptly. DIY as much as I can, luckily I have family that are machinists, welders and good carpenters [emoji26]

Yep, but the good thing is when you make something by your self and you like the results your will enjoy more.

LOL. I bought a Skimz UP30 sump and a Skimz 143-qp skimmer for my other tank, then upgraded to the 150 so I can only imagine the reaction about to come as well!! [emoji16]

Little update.

New coral, new Vlamingi Tang an Apex, dosing pumps, and a peristaltic pump wired to the Apex for a 3 gal/day water change. Much more stable and reliable.
