I beliebe i also already have a couple RIO return pumps. Brand new still. One i used to mix saltwater thays it. Maybe ill use the 20 long for now and if thay goes well eventually ill upgrade . Didnt think id ever get back into it.
It just hangs off the back of the rim. But if you are asking what to do for a reef tank? You need to change some things around. The stock filter comes with ceramic bio media and carbon which is great for freshwater. But it doesn't do much in terms for saltwater.
The media basket i found for aquaclear70 is about $50 which isnt too bad.

I know! and if you look at it, you can add like 3 different medias at once in it. Plus it slides in and out perfectly for cleaning. I want one for my 20g high but really i'm trying to break down my 20 gallon lol
What kind of media do you recommend putting into the basket ? I had a 57 gallon.and that felt like a second job. Lol
I had a 75 gallon aqua clear on my old 30 gallon reef and it did wonders for me, the flow and filtration rate was perfect, the only problem was that I had to keep topping the water off due to the high flow from the filter, but I kept everything stock and I would sometimes pull the media bag out and you could see the pods that were taking it over, truly cool!
The first 5 months all you need is some filter floss to keep the water clear. Then add something like carbon. once you start increasing nutrients like no3 and po4 you'll want some chemipure or gfo. You could also put some seachem matrix in there for added bio filteration.
You just need live rock. I run my 20 gallon naked. No filter or skimmer. Filters like hang on back filters are mostly used for polishing. But if you start having nutrient problems, you'll want one to help nutrient export.
If you are dedicated to the hobby and can clean your tank every week or two, canisters are really nice and quiet, and very cheap too. I use one on my 56 gal and I can customize what media I want and also filter pads and stuff, the only thing to clean it for is that there will be a buildup of nitrates in there due to the waste being trapped in it.
Canisters are notorious for nitrate build-up. PITA

Nah, most the particles settle within the tank. All i do is perform 25% water change every week.

You could even dose the tank with bio-spira to put a colony of bacteria in right away, but I recommend you do the cycle instead just to be safe...
Even if you have the filter you would still need to do at least bi-weekly water changes to get rid of nitrates
