The strange thing, I also have gha growing same time. It’s a mess. I have chaeto growing in a pax bellum, and have tried the blackout. I have not tried dosing bacteria yet. Since it does move to the water column at night I can see how the UV would be a good choice. I just need to order a better one and get it plumbed even if temporarily to start.
Same thing here , I had GHA but Dino’s where even growing on it! You got this tho don’t give up! It got worse before it got better for me but eventually they just seemingly disappeared or died out , I ran only blue lights at 20% for a week to not tick off anemones too much lol

Thanks for the information. Do you have any manufacturer recommendations?
I used an aqua UV 57 watt for a 180 gallon tank. Sometimes I ran a jebao 55 watt along with it. The jebao was much cheaper and seemed to work, but also seems to degrade around the 6 month mark. I am talking a physical degradation where black specs would come seemed to come off the shell of the unit. I stopped using that one.

Thank you for your recommendation. That one has been recommended twice, and I am looking at it now.

You will want at least 70 watts of UV plumbed directly into and back to display. UV manufacturers information doesn’t play well with dinos. You’ll want 2 or 3 tank volumes per hour running through it. Slow and strong.
I am a little curious about how you are plumbing into the display. I don't have much room on the back of the display.....rookie mistake there. Are you plumbing into overflow or directly into display? Do you have something to prevent livestock from getting curious about the intake?

I was thinking I could use an extra return pump I have and plumb 3/4in to either side of the tank. Have the pump be external. This unfortunately leave a bunch of additinal visible plumbing in display. Wondering if you had any tricks for how to actually set this up. I see a lot online plumb the UV into the return, but it seems this won't help as I need to be pulling from the display and not the sump. I guess I could pull from the display and return to the sump to keep it a little cleaner.

Anyways, just looking for some ideas.

Thanks

It’s great but spendy. I have the 57w aquaUV and also the 114w which is two 57w housings combined.

if that’s in your price range, you really can’t go wrong with aquaUV, pentair or emperor. Look at the different units and more specifically the size of each unit and pick which will fit your your system from a physical size perspective. I got the 114w because it pretty compact for the wattage.

I’d also suggest getting the highest watt unit you can afford. More watts is always better In the UV context IMO.

when I handled dinos, I just put the pump directly In the display close to the bottom. It has a guard to prevent fish from going for a ride. Then the exit line for the UV also is in the DT. I used a cheap jebao DC so I could control the flow.

the reason for this is that many/most of the dinos don’t make it to the sump so having a UV pump in the sump is far less effective.
I battled dinos for a couple years. The whole time I had a 114w UV in the sump. Once I added the 57w to the DT, the dinos were gone within a week and haven’t returned. Once I thought they were coming back so I put the 57w back in the DT. Removed it two days later. And no dinos appeared.

I hung mine off the back of the display and used a small powerhead for flow. Here a FTS from a few weeks back. You will see the powerhead in the upper left corner. It’s not very obtrusive but has been removed a couple weeks ago. @saltyhog did something similar off the side of his tank. Let me know if you want more details.

Thanks so much for the help. I bought the 57w to try. I have some space limitations and didn’t think I could get the 114w setup even temporarily. Hoping this will be enough.

I appreciate the help and will post here after I receive it and have it run in for some time.

When setting up my tank I made the worst rookie mistake and set my tank against the wall with only an inch to spare. As you can imagine, has been tough to work with. Thanks for all your help. we will see in about 2weeks how things are progressing. Stronger up and pump arrive tomorrow.

Ok the 57 watt Aqua UV is setup and running for two night periods. I am blowing off the rocks twice a day. I have the old UV running in the sump still. Lost a few corals including my favorite torch so hopefully see a turnaround here.

Good luck! I kept my sump UV running as well. It did increase my tank temp a couple degrees.

You might do a water change after blowing off the rocks. The dead dinos may release toxins.

Thanks for the tip. I am currently doing daily auto changes. 10% a week. I am assuming I will need to do a 30% once these thing start to recede?

I'd do it a little sooner. Do a good blast of the rocks and then siphon out the dirty water to get as many out as you can before they are killed by the UV. No need to do lots of big changes. I did 10% every few days, maybe two or three total changes. Then the dinos were gone. poof!
