DIY Manganese Recipe Library

Thanks, maybe I’ll stop using it and get one that was mentioned on this thread. Which would you recommend if you do not mind me asking.

I use food grade manganese gluconate. :)

Here’s the recipe for manganese gluconate by Randy:

Manganese gluconate is 12.4% manganese by weight.

Dissolve 1 gram of the solid material in 1 L of RO/DI. That solution contains 124 mg of manganese, so the concentration is 124 mg/L or 124 ug/mL.

Adding 1 mL to 100 L of tank water will boost aquarium manganese levels by 124 ug per 100 L or 1.24 ug/L.

I was wondering if anyone could clear something up for me. I’ve been using fauna Marin’s manganese supplement but recently decided to go diy. I’d like to make my diy supplement similar strength to fauna Marin so my dosing amount stays the same. I already bought gluconate so I believe this is still the most current recipe for mixing up a batch. My question lies with the strength of the mix as this states increases 1.24 ug/l per 1ml in 100L, fauna Marin increases 4 ug/l per 1ml in 100L. So can I increase the amount of gluconate I mix in to get similar results?

Thanks!

I was reading a little bit on this as I want to start dosing Manganese.

If I understand correctly, Gluconate is organic and needs to be stored in the fridge? Manganese(II) chloride tetrahydrate is inorganic and can be stored at room temperature, which means it can be put on an auto doser?

If I decide to use Gluconate, about how long would a bottle last at room temp under my aquarium stand?

I don’t believe it needs cold storage. :)
So I've tried making my own mix for a 250 gallon water volume reef.

1 gallon jug - RO/DI - 1000 ML AcroPower - 0.50g of Manganese Gluconate from bulk reef supplements.

I'm dosing this at midnight. 1 time per day at 20 ML.

Did I do the math right for a weak first batch?

it didn't seem like much Manganese, so I'm trying to verify that it just takes very little of this in a mix?

Thanks for any help.

Trace elements are always present in tiny amounts.

This is the recipe:

Manganese gluconate is 12.4% manganese by weight.

Dissolve 1 gram of the solid material in 1 L of RO/DI. That solution contains 124 mg of manganese, so the concentration is 124 mg/L or 124 ug/mL.

Adding 1 mL to 100 L of tank water will boost aquarium manganese levels by 124 ug per 100 L or 1.24 ug/L.

Your solution is about 13% as strong and you are adding it to about 9.4 times as much tank volume, so you would add about 72 times as much. You are adding 20x as much so you are dosing well below the 1.2 ug/L I mentioned.

Thanks for holding my hand on this, Randy. So if I bump my 1 gallon solution up to about 1.75g of Manganese Gluconate I should be around target ?

I would qualify that to say that “target” is just a recipe concentration and dosing amount to reach a particular level in the tank. It is not a recommendation that this dosed amount is appropriate for all tanks.

Manganese is rapidly depleted, but if not dosing based on icp-ms measurements, I’d add less. Maybe 1/10 to 1/2 as much as the words above indicate.

Thus, you could stick with your original recipe amount.

I appreciate it. I will start here as the new reef matures, i'll start doing ICP tests. Thanks for getting me started.
