DIY Manganese Recipe Library

It’s a correct chemical choice, and is likely fine since so little is used, but its purity is unknown.
Thanks Randy, i'll give it a shot and see how it goes!

Works out so much cheaper than buying the off the shelf Manganese suppliments.

You’re welcome.

Happy Reefing. :)
I have been dosing the iron and the manganese every 3 days and haven't really seen any additional polyp extension. I also dose All for Reef but do you think I need to increase to every 2 days? Thank you!

I would not assume that polyp extension is a good indicator of trace element availability.

Any suggestions? I know that iron and manganese gets used up quickly. I’m having a heck of a time with these gonis. They are out but just not fully extended like they should be.

@Miami Reef

I got some of this now - the back shows it to be (%W/W)
31% Manganese (Mn) as Sulphate
20% Sulphur (S) as Sulphate

Would i adjust the recipe at all, or does that sound about right?

The recipe you are following uses 25% manganese by weight. Yours is 31%.

25/31=0.806

So you’d need 0.8 g per L rather than 1 g per L to match it exactly.

@Randy Holmes-Farley can confirm.

I don’t have any useful advice about goniopora beyond what’s in this thread. :)

The updated first post in this thread makes this officially a true library.

If anyone has a chemical unlisted, and you'd like a recipe with it, please let us know.

Ok, so I see a bunch of recipe's, and, I'm comfy with the math. But, I want to make my own that matches my current dosing routine (RM), how do I know what their concentration is so I can match it?
Sure. I can try to help. What does RM stand for?

Try using Reef Chemistry Calculator and seeing the potency difference between the products. The Balling Method uses the same concentration as Randy Recipe 1.

He means Reef Moonshine.

I’ve grown weary of redesigning perfectly good diy recipes to match someone else’s stuff.

Shoot. I got confused and thought this post was in the Balling Method DIY thread.

Too many DIY threads out there. 🙂

Right, I understand. What I really want is 2x concentration. I suppose I can dig and figure it out but I was hoping one of you knew offhand.

This thread mentions a RM calculator. If you knew much much their stock solution raised manganese in a given volume, a recipe could potentially be made. https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/moonshiners-manganese-concentration.1060010/

Or you can find a starting manganese dose (NSW level dosing) and adjust up or down based on future ICP results?

2x my recipe or 2x moonshines?

If you know how much you want to dose in ug/L, you can scale my recipe up or down.

I understand your weariness. I’ve seen these questions constantly and have even asked you some. I believe it is because people are trying to get off the RM subscription though and learn for themselves. However, the confidence isn’t there since this level of chemistry is so foreign to us. I’m sure the people that are just starting out could easily use the recipes you’ve created but most people switching over from RM are having to figure out how to crossover without overdosing elements like crazy. That’s where the constant questions about RM doses comes from. Especially since finding out most of the elements are heavily diluted and the extremely high cost is mostly a bottle of water. I wish I had just started with your original recipes however I did not know about them at the time.

yes, I get that.

I was doing some research on what Gonapora need in a tank to do well, I love them but never had any success with them. I read a lot about manganese and just found this thread. I had bought a product from Amazon “Perect Coral Mn” not much information on the strength of Mn and I’m confused on the dosing and which product is actually in there. I added less than 1ml in 60 gallon tank few days ago and corals reacted pretty well. But by reading I’m not sure if I’m doing the right thing. Tank is clean and doing well right now I’m afraid of an algae bloom, if I’m doing to much. I guess the only way to find out is ICP testing. Any experience on this product? Should I toss it and get something more reliable with the proper Mn? IMG_7064.jpeg
