In our house, with cheap stuff, we don't usually ask each other, but for more expensive purchases we always run it by each other first then we decide if we want to buy the item or not

Shure… just a small frag. Like I knew no one else would buy the poor thing—it needed rescuing, right? In our house, with cheap stuff, we don't usually ask each other, but for more expensive purchases we always run it by each other first then we decide if we want to buy the item or not
Are you asking about the perception most hobbyists have about how popular hobbyists get equipment for their systems?
Are you asking if companies use hobbyists to inadvertently shill for them by offering product for free or at a very discounted rate? And in turn, most of the (what I like to call) tourists are unsuspecting and see that everyone uses this product. Which means, surely they must pay full price if they want to be successful.
To where the tourist never suspects anything to be out of the ordinary and is happy to pay retail because everybody else did.
The product being equipment, corals, food, additives etc.
Is that what you're asking?

Hey, I ordered a small 126,797g AIO in-wall Peninsula with a diving board, whirlpool, and potty-trained sharks. I got I 25,000% off. Hope you don't mind!In our house, with cheap stuff, we don't usually ask each other, but for more expensive purchases we always run it by each other first then we decide if we want to buy the item or not
If it was free that's fine, although my question is where are we going to put something that hugeHey, I ordered a small 126,797g AIO in-wall Peninsula with a diving board, whirlpool, and potty-trained sharks. I got I 25,000% off. Hope you don't mind!![]()
I'm the impulsive one, luckily my wife's grown to be the patient one for both of us and it's starting to rub of on me finally. Took long enoughI don't know guys, I am the missus in our house and I am the one with the tank. I have found honesty and transparency to be the best policy when approaching my Mr about new stuff for the tank. He has his own hobby and holds to the same policy of honesty and transparency. We both try to use self control and it builds patience which isn't a bad thing either.
I tell myself the same thing. Lol!There are also the hobbyists that companies are afraid to give products too... for fear of honest reviews and public feedback...

for me it was buying ANOTHER AP9x that I didn't even have a tank for yet - because it was on discount for cyber monday, which is what I explained to my wife ("these kessil products are usually NEVER on sale!"). Thanks amazonWe’ve all been there. Don't tell no lies. The WWC haul that was "practically free," the ahem "necessary" new frag rack because the old one mysteriously broke, or the upgraded light that’s "way more energy-efficient" (totally why it cost so much).
Let’s be real—does reefing have its own Bro Code? You know, the unspoken rules we all follow to keep the peace at home while quietly pushing the limits of our tanks (and budgets). What’s your favorite Bro Code moment? I wanna hear your stories before I give up on reefing. Your secret is safe here… probably
Please don't out anyone. Bro code still applies. I'll go first:
I bought a 900 XXL, on a discount and also on a red sea direct sale, also on a heavy discount, because they were having a year end sale+ once in a year sale + (I forget). We saved almost 50%![]()
None really. I did ask CV about beta testing the Maven and they declined. I would have paid for it if I kept it or returned it after I ran it through its paces and purchased one at retail if I liked it. I don't want "free" stuff or be expected to temper my comments based on that kind of consideration. What companies would you like to review bean?
In my experience "gotta ask the wife" roughly translates to "I am not yet certain that I want to buy this product/service from you at this price, but for some reason I am not comfortable just directly telling you that, so instead I will use the need to seek spousal approval as a more comfortable, indirect way of telling you I am not ready to buy."Coming from a female perspective, this doesn't stop at tank purchases. I can't tell you how many times my husband tried to sell something auto related and the other had to go ask the wife, even for required parts that keep the truck/car running. Wheels and tires? Oh gotta ask the wife, lift kit? gotta ask the wife, basic oil change? Gotta ask the wife.
Nooo! you didn't just drop the bro code didja? In my experience "gotta ask the wife" roughly translates to "I am not yet certain that I want to buy this product/service from you at this price, but for some reason I am not comfortable just directly telling you that, so instead I will use the need to seek spousal approval as a more comfortable, indirect way of telling you I am not ready to buy."
Based on my age and average life expectancy, I am currently on the downhill side of life. If that's true and I cracked the bro code, it needed to be revamped anyway.Nooo! you didn't just drop the bro code didja?![]()
Sounds like a win-> <- Win to meI feel like my husband and I have mastered the “wow, that looks like it must have cost a lot” look while the other silently says to self “now I get to go buy more fish/coral” (in his case video games or video game equipment. To be fair, I am an enabler in that I tend to buy him his favorite toys when birthdays or anniversaries come around and most of my recent presents have been fish or coral.
I won't say that we had practiced such patience when we were young married. We've been married 43 coming on 44 years now so we've had a lot of practice.Wow, the discipline in you is on another level! In a good way. Meanwhile, I’m over here mastering the art of "it was on sale, I swear!"
