Don't purchase where possible wild-caught Coral

Going to leave this contradiction here
particularly Acropora has a survival rate of less than 10%.
He had stopped selling wild-caught Acropora for that reason.
It lasts just long enough to be sold plus approximately 2 weeks then dies of RTN.
It is because our reef tank conditions can never match the environment, as hard
That is twaddle, if it is a small frag and has evidence of encrustation of said frag which is the first sign of growth then it is aquaculture even if it came from a piece of wild-caught.
The difference is, that it has demonstrated adaptation to the tank environment.
How hard it that to understand?
How can wild coral not survive but then be called aquaculture the minute it starts encrusting/surviving?
So if all wild caught acropora don't really survive, how can they then grow and be aquaculture coral?
You seem to like conflict, even when it contradicts yourself.

Your behavior and attitude towards other members is atrocious. Not everyone agrees with everything here. But there is a respectful way of still communicating your disagreement without insulting others or wild accusations when someone doesn't agree with you.

If you have a 90% failure rate at anything you may want to consider doing something else.

If you're having a 90% failure rate and others aren't, it may be time for some self-examination. Some introspection perhaps.

Well, goal is to help those struggling so they don't have to give up so they will understand how to improve as a hobbyist. But I understand the frustration right now .

On the weekend, my LFS guy said that a bunch of local stores had a shipment of 70k CAD of wild acropora get stuck in customs and it was a total loss.

How sad is that.

After being in the industry for 15 years, I came out of it only supporting aquacultured fish and coral outside of a few edge cases like fish which survive well and are needed as pest control.

This hobby has come a long way. Even a lot of aquaculture corals are now grown in the wild which is really neat and they add back to the reefs as well with programs. What makes wild coral so popular is how much cheaper they are because of the name markup. Give a coral ultra rainbow or holy Grail and some sellers raise the price 500 or more over what it would be worth. And some won't even be traced back to the actual lineage where the name came from.

There is still a cost to grow out these pieces and to make a profit but not some of these extreme prices I see.

An honest coral reseller actually confided in me that wild-caught stony coral,
particularly Acropora has a survival rate of less than 10%.
He had stopped selling wild-caught Acropora for that reason.
It lasts just long enough to be sold plus approximately 2 weeks then dies of RTN.

as we might try.
Save your money and protect the environment
It is best to buy aquaculture, and a small frag is the best way to ensure this.
And select one that has encrusted growth on the frag itself.
It's also much better for our coral reefs.
The only way your honest coral seller could know that would be if he knew every coral seller on the planet, and what their losses were. It's a completely unprovable claim. Honest or not.
Did you surf Waikiki Beach, I used to sit on the sand in front of the Outrigger Waikiki Beach Resort
and watch the super white untanne
d people from the US come and hire a board, and paddle out so they could say they surfed Waikiki to their mates when they returned, were you one of those?
Not everything that comes from North Carolina is right
Ummm..... Hawaii is the U.S.
Well brainchild of nowhere! Since you do not have a name or a place!
Coral propagation in captivity is only division since no one has cracked growing them from eggs yet, or even being able to get them to spawn.
Many people have had coral spawn. Both in home aquariums and in lab facilities.
So anyone who does not agree with you is a troll?
How does that work, or are you a coral reseller using a fake profile
No. You're a troll not because there's disagreement, but because of the way you present your side of the argument. It's like trying to reason with a ticked off two year old child.
There we go, you are the reason why this system should not include resellers, dude
If you are selling the stuff, how can anyone be sure of the information?
It called a conflict of interest dude, you guys know all about it
Your honest coral vendor is selling aquacultured SPS. How can you be sure of the information he/she presented to you? Wouldn't that be a conflict of interest?

And FWIW, I'm not anti-aquaculture. I just don't believe that most of what you have to say is based upon any factual information.

I think you have gotten one opinion from one coral seller. You seem to have a bias for aquaculture everything - which some people have - all good. But - to me is seems like you're applying your preference to suggest that thats 'best'. The only way Frags got into tanks was from wild collection. Based on the source of coral here - I do not think this is a significant issue if coral is properly acclimated and collected (where legal)

Thanks to everyone who participated in good faith in this thread. Most participants in this thread have handled the debate very well. It was certainly a lively debate over one reef hobbyist's opinion. We do believe that this debate has run its course and given the tone of some of the harsher posts, we believe it's a good idea to close this one and move on.

Just a general reminder that while topics like this may have strongly held opinions, all disagreements should be handled respectfully/civilly and insults/personal attacks should never be made.

Happy reefing!
