Emergency: Derasa Clam Detached Hinge

Just to add a datapoint: My Derasa's hinge detached 6 months ago and I did the frag plug/rubber band procedure and he's still alive and seemingly happy. I've had to replace the rubberbands 2 or 3 times. They degrade and break eventually and the clam gets lopsided again and a new band fixes it. Rubberband does need to be fairly tight.
Do you mind sharing a picture where you attached the plugs and bands?

Well, the clam is able to open and close now and the halfs are staying aligned, but.. he isn’t near as full. Hoping for a recovery.

Is it time for a fresh water dip or will that just cause more stress?

Usually if the tissue is that far receded in to the shell it’s not good. Monitor closely if it gets worse it may be too late.

FW dip is only for treating PMD, which isn’t the issue here, so there’s absolutely no reason to do it. I know people will dip new clams as a precaution, but if the clam is stressed or in poor condition, there’s no reason for it.

That’s what I figured. No pinched mantle..

Time to see if it’ll recover on its own. The clam seems to be opening and closing quite well now, staying aligned.
