Excessive Cloudiness

Alright so after starting up my tank (six weeks ago) I've got very cloudy water. I used 90% base rock, and one piece of LR to seed with, my skimmer is an SWC Cone 160 and it's a 33G tank. I started dosing MB7 for about a week then I got the stringy, filmy bacteria coming off my rocks - it's been about two weeks since I last dosed MB7 and they are still there (albeit in a much smaller degree). My water is very cloudy/hazy and my filter socks are practically useless (I think they're either 100 micron or the stringy bacteria is clogging them up in a matter of a few hours). My skimmer is pulling out practically clear water, I imagine it's because there isn't much of a bioload with two clowns and a flameback angel. I've done two water changes and it's really about the same; i did notice that the salt wasn't mixing completely clear and on one of the batches it was actually precipitation this white stuff up at the top (Oceanic salt). I can't figure it out, please help.

kray after the Mb7 seeding for 2 weeks what is ur maintenance dose currently?

Lol I'm not Kray, that was just something he said that I liked. I haven't dosed anything since the stringy slime stuff appeared. I read in Sunny's guide and it said to stop dosing if that stuff came.

I use to get this brown stringly slimy stuff on my rocks, but this was only after starting my reef biofuel and it was due to me dosing too much........
What color is the stringy stufff?? u think it could be cyano? if so i think sunny said to dose more mb7 if u see signs of cyano

It's definitely not cyano. It's a clear/translucent white stuff. I'd never seen it before but not it's just about everywhere. I stopped dosing about a 10-14 days ago and since then the slime has dissipated but it's still clinging on.

Ive started Mb7 twice and never experienced a white translucent film previously, and ive never read anything on it when i was researching on mb7, other people can chime on if they know what it is but you can PM sunnyx and ask him what he thinks it is since hes kinda like an expert with the mb7/vodka dosing ups and downs.

Yeah I was a mouse click from posting this in his dosing guide, but I know he's a busy man and I'd like to get the general consensus beforehand. Thanks though, I'll probably end up PM'ing him.

I have seen the white stringy stuff when I overdosed a bit on MB7 in my qt tank. Water changes solved the problem, make sure your salt is well mixed before adding. I try to wait at least 24 hours, although that may not be necessary it is to be safe in this instance.

white slime!!!

This is a white slime bactira, I've batteled it in a tank i service at a dentist office now for 8 months. I hopes this Helps all that encounter this Foul Foul bactria.

I'm tearing down this tank in the office( cycleing the rock again and cleaning the entire aquarium with 5 gal of hydrogen peroxide), I already started a 29cube to transfer fish for the customer.

I got a little of the white stringy stuff when I first started carbon dosing. I started with the v/s/v mixture and I always had issues with the sugar component. the stringy stuff didn't disappear until I stopped using sugar in the mix. The only other thing I can think of is if you did any silicone work and used the wrong type with the mold inhibitor. Did you do any silicone work on your sump or anything in the tank recently? Other than that like the articles that Reefsmoker posted it could be anything that contaminated the tank by getting in the water or present in the air. Hope you figure it out.

Alright I don't think mine is the same stuff as that devil algae that ya'll are describing. Mine is almost cleared up, I think another week or so and it'll be gone. My main concern is the cloudiness - it looks like I just started the tank up. I just ran tests on the big three - Alk 10.6, Ca 450, and NO3 0 (all Salifert). I let my water mix for a day with a Maxijet before adding it so I don't think it's anything with letting it dissolve completely.
