Stupid questions are good, it shows your speciality lies somewhere else, that’s all. Show me someone who knows everything and I’ll show you someone who knows very little about anything.
I’m not sure I can get on board with this. Stupid questions from a place of ignorance after effort, fine. Stupid questions from a place of laziness and asking others to do the work for you…not so much.

example:
  1. i am new to saltwater reefing, what should my salinity be?
  2. I am new to saltwater feeding, I have seen conflicting advice on 1.023 vs 1.025. What should my salinity be

Does anyone else get scared to ask certain questions about problems they are facing because of the fear of judgement?
I used to.. Seeing a lot of users with Dr degrees can be intimidating. I will google things like "Algae identification macro "site:Reef2Reef"" (keep the quotes around reef2reef, google will only search webpages with reef2reef) i will say 95% of the time i can find an answer but the other time i just open a discussion to see if anyone else had had similar issues.

I have the occasional question that seems stupid to some. For example “How do I mix up a 2ppm phosphate stock solution using sodium triphosphate”. I could spend hours researching that question and still get the wrong answer because there are specialised criteria for obtaining the answer, such as the water content of the TSP. Alternatively I could post the question on the chemistry forum and someone like Dan-p would walk me through it. It’s a very efficient means of information sharing. I can only think of 1 person recently on this site that I’ve seen, that obviously does no research on anything, however, he may have certain life challenges which I can fully empathise. Obviously he may just be a lazy bugger also, but nobody is forcing anyone else to reply.

One time, maybe twice :)

The fact that you indicated the water content of the tsp means you have done some research of both what would raise phosphates and what is a good additive…and now you are asking for fine tuning on approach. It really does take a lot to fall to the place of pure laziness to the point I judge…but those questions have been posted.

We always use the term in the medical field "there's never a stupid question to ask". For me at least, if I am unsure of something I'll either just do a quick google search for an answer or just ask the question. I'd rather ask a question than attempt something on my own and it is wrong or messes something up.

The chemistry forum should be a fear free place to post chemistry questions and issue.

That’s the whole reason for existence: what is trivial for some folks is very challenging for others.

Sometimes its tough or embarrassing to ask because maybe you made a stupid mistake. However its best to suck it up and risk the embarrassing moment because you owe it to your pets to give them the best care possible! The best way to fix a mistake is to admit it, take proper actions and learn from the experience then move on.

I want a saltwater fish tank. Does it require water, as I would really like a dry fish tank because of the water shortage. If I do a dry saltwater fish tank, do I still need to add salt?

still think there are no stupid questions?
I’ve always loved salt fish stewed with potatoes and veggies

I think you can have a dry fish tank with salt cod. The cod should have enough salt in it to make up for the lack of saltwater.

Also, you should add your reply because it's obviously loaded to the gills with salt. :winking-face-with-tongue:

It's the first thing I thought of when I read it. Making bad decisions is an unfortunate part of the learning process. The problem is that you are caring for live animals and in lots of cases reacting as fast as possible with the proper solution is the only thing that will save them. Wasting time being worried about being embarrassed could be the difference between life and death. Furthermore if you don't ask then maybe you don't learn that you have made a mistake or how to fix it. I feel that there is nothing more embarrassing than making a mistake and not learning anything from it. Everyone is here to help each other! Thats what makes R2R a great place. Even if a question has been answered 10,000 times people will still answer it to help someone learn or to save a life.

I don’t feel intimidated to ask a question, but giving advice using my experience from reefing for 16 years from the mid 90’s does intimidate me. With all the changes I’m sure I’m not all caught up. Still running things mostly old school.

Being the owner of R2R and the fact that I've been in the hobby for so long has kept me from posting some questions in the past. YES I know, it shouldn't matter! For the most part though I have just laid down my pride and asked the questions that need to be asked. I also ask them for the current and future hobbyists who are and will be looking for the answers. Remember some people will never ask a question because they won't create an account and be able to start a new thread so they are just searching. The questions asked, both big and small, will benefit everyone!

Well, put!! It has to be intimidating for some people when they ask a question that might seem basic to us but really advanced for them! Especially when asking a question to people who have been in the hobby for almost their entire lives
