Hello,
I am new to the saltwater world and I have heard that you have to have more filtration for a saltwater tank than a freshwater one, which is understandable. I was wondering if there is such thing as over filtration. I have read that one of the problems is to much current for the fish. I saw a smokin' deal on a fluval FX 6 at my local pet store and I was wondering is this is to much filtration for a 45 gal tank? Anything helps! Thank you!

Are you doing a fish only or reef? Most people that keep reef tanks don't use canister filters at all. We use skimmers and the latest things are refugiums or algea reactors to grow natural algae that helps remove bad things from the water. A skimmer removes things before they can break down.

Generally canisters are considered bad because the good bacteria can build up and when you go to clean them, you lose a lot of bacteria which can negatively effect your tank. Reef tanks HATE change

I planned on doing some fish and live rock but I am open and willing to learn about it all (:

For a fish only tank I’ve see people run as little as power heads and live rock. There are a lot of different ways to set a tank up. Do you have to run a skimmer no. Will it help keep your tank healthy yes. If you have room you could run a sump but again do have to have it no.
