So I would like to set up a FOWLR tank at some point in the future, but have a hair up there to start researching now. I have compiled a preliminary list just to get peoples thoughts on compatibility and what tank size I should be looking to get.
If you have any "must have" fish I should look at because of personality or beauty, please feel free to recommend them!!
Emporer Angel
Dragon Wrasse
Porcupine Puffer
Clown trigger (Probably cannot have the lionfish and the trigger)
Wrought Iron Butterfly fish
Tessalata Eel or maybe a Zebra Moray
Harlequin Tusk
Radiata Lionfish
Marbled Bamboo Cat Shark

Gold Stripe Maroon Pair.

As you can see, this would be more of an aggressive tank..

I would try to get a juvenile harlequin tusk. i had one and it had tons of personality. I would also say add some sort of jawfish...i have a blue spot but his health is questionable...apparently that get a bacterial disease and it is common. maybe try a pearly jawfish or something.

I may do that, although it seems as if this may be a little small for a tank like this..

As this is a dream tank, I have not picked a size, I suppose I would like people to recommend a tank size for the fish list I have, then as fish get added or removed, I will make adjustments.

+1 on tank size, I am assuming something REALLY big with a shark on the list. ;) LOVE the emporor angel, one of my all time favorites and when I have a large tank I will definately have one.

Why would you not be able to have a lion and a trigger? One of my friends had that combo in a tank long ago with no problems. I thought lions were only an issue if you could fit in their mouth.

I am pretty sure with an emperor you would need a MIN. of 6', and would be better for 8'. They get about 1' long, same recommendations for the clown trigger with additional caveat that the bigger the tank the less issues with agression you would have from the clown. Those 2 will be the biggest determination for tank size... unless you consider the shark. I am going to bow out of that one as I don't know. I kindof feel like they would need something with a min L of 10', but my heart says longer by alot as they get 2' long themselves.

It shouldn't need to be huge huge, they only get to be around 10-12". It's not the trigger I'm worried about, it would be the lionfish. I have seen videos of triggers biting the spines off of a lionfish.

I loved my Naso Tang more than anything else when I had a large FOWLR. I would want some sort of tang to eat algae because any snails or crabs would be dinner in that tank. I found that to be my biggest frustration of the FOWLR set up. The tendency with a FOWLR is heavy bioload, cheaper lighting, and messy eaters. That all combines to make a big algae and cynobac. issue. It can be solved but fish choice can prevent some problems.

I would wonder though about a FOWLR and the shark. I have always heard you need a soft sand tank with little or no rock because they get scratched so easily. Never had one but you can cut tank size a lot by removing that one from the list as well.

On size length is key. Mine was a custom one that was about 7 1/2 feet long but only 150 gallons. The length allowed me to keep larger species very happy and healthy.

Hope you get to put something together soon. The big fish are really run! You will love them.

Its the other way around. Some triggers nip at some lionfish. Mostly a case by case issue unfortunately so it is hard to plan.

I would go with a 240 and stock it to the hill with a good skimmer lol... I love Angels of all kinds and triggers have great personalities... I will never get a fowler unless I get rid of the reef I'm limited to 1 tank for now..:(

Paradise Pets: Bamboo Cat Shark

I looked at a couple sites and they all are reporting that adults reach upwards of 3+ feet!! Wow. And then still have a min tank size of 180g... which cant be right. They must be saying that is a min tank size for a juvenille.

SUPER cool animal though. I feel like I have seen sharks mostly in very large circular aquariums, I think so they can swim continuously.

I'd love to see that video. Was that in aquarium or in the wild? Maybe triggers should be released of the coast of Florida to help control the out of control Lion population!! haha.

If tank size is open, I would go with something longer (8 feet maybe)? I am setting up my 350G which is 96X30X28. The depth is important for reef, but in FOWLR, go long even if you are 24 deep...

It's funny, for some reason I completely didn't think of "reef safe" fishes for this. How limiting am I being on myself?? lol Naso or powder blue and maybe a desjardini would be fun additions.

Where the hell did I read they grew to be about a foot long? Oh I see, saw liveaquaria sells them. What they consider to be large is 10-12", but they do indeed get to be over 3 feet.
LOL on the trigger con†rol method, I'm thinking that may be short term progress
