Fox Face with circular wound - ID?

#fishmedic

May I get some medical advice on the Fox Face’s wound condition and progress from the above post ☝️?

Thank you in advance 🙏

I’ve been watching the white plaque on the lesion, it looks worse today, unsure why.

Well that’s not good news.

Could you describe what the “white plaque” is and what I should be looking for with regards to it?

Also, what should my next steps be? Tomorrow (Nov. 3) at 7 would be the full 3 rounds of Kanaplex.

The white plaque is the growth on top of the lesion. It is probably bacterial in composition. It looked like it was going away, but it seemed to have returned in today’s photo.

#fishmedic Is it possible that if the infection is not suitably healing that a wider treatment of combining Kanaplex, Furan 2 and Metroplex be a solution?

That’s the problem with antibiotics - without doing a Petri dish sensitivity study, you can never know exactly which one will work best.

Multiple medications come with an increased risk of negative interactions. Kanaplex has some toxicity risk to begin with. At the very least, I’d skip the metro.

Understood.

Specifically what would you medically suggest with the little info I’ve provided, after the full ~48hr*3 Kanaplex treatment?
  1. Do another full treatment of Kanaplex?
  2. Full Kanaplex with a secondary medication - like Furan-2?
  3. Something else?
There seems to be an issue with furan-2 availability, possibly discontinued. Is there an alternative?

I like to use Neoplex.

The option here down-under, due to retail restrictions on antibiotics, would be to take the fish to a vet who would probably take a scraping to prescribe a suitable med.

Depending on how attached you are to the fish...

I wish there was a marine vet down here in Orange County California. I have never heard of one but I’ll ask around.

@Jay Hemdal I’ve ordered Seachem Neoplex and it’ll be here tomorrow sometime via Amazon. So please let me know if I should use this with another round of Kanaplex or a solo treatment of Neoplex.

I’ll also call around for exotic type vets, or any vet, that might treat fish.

Tip i got off this forum for the sea chem ammonia badge. When reading the color shine a light from behind it. Makes the colors way easier to read.

No real need to fuss with the ammonia binders on a 20 long, just have a bucket or two of water mixed and ready to change out on short notice. Water change if you are getting nervous about the badge color!

Well, both here and in the UK folks just take fish to the normal dog/cat type of vet.
They're trained to treat any animals, and the tools/meds are not specific to any animal.

Although I rather treat myself it would be nice to know if I have a local vet option. As I call around how should I explain to a vet what I need or what service I’m looking for?

I’m not sure if you ever figured out the cause, but the original wound looked an awful lot like when my starry blenny bit my foxface. It left aake just like that only not quite as deep from the looks of it. I wonder if yours could have been bitten and then an infection took hold?

I would stop the Kanaplex, since it doesn't seem to be helping. No guarantees that the Neoplex will help either, just that it's safe to use and is a broad spectrum, gram negative antibiotic.

Alright. 👍.

Sounds like the plan. If I do get a hold of a vet that will do a check, scrape and diagnosis based on results I’ll let you know here.

Here are the directions for Neoplex via Seachem’s website:

_________

Directions

Dosing in Water

Remove all invertebrates - these are extremely sensitive to medication. Turn off UV filters, ozone filters, and remove chemical filtration like MatrixCarbon™ and Purigen®. Use 1 measure (included) per every 8 L (2 US gallons). Repeat this dose every 7 days to a maximum of 3 weeks. This will treat external bacterial infections.
__________

I’m going to follow those directions unless suggested otherwise by #fis#fishmedicfessionals like @Jay Hemdal

I tried to get a better shot out of water with the help of my daughter. We got some ok shots but I didn't want to stress the fish out too much:
