You're comparing apples with oranges

The seachem badge is measuring toxic ammonia, whereas the API test is measuring total ammonia.

The toxicity of the total ammonia is affected by pH, which the badge takes into account.

My experience is that you can trust the badge.
I didn’t know that. That’s good to know. Thank you.

I'm just going to suggest that you don't rely too much on using Prime, it's been shown to be ineffective at binding or neutralizing ammonia:

5 gallon water change and re-dosed just one scoop of kanaplex to make up the changed water.

Maybe I fed her too much today — more than the bio filter could process.

I don’t broadcast feed in the QT. I literally hand feed her long thin strips of nori that she gobbles down- so nothing uneaten. But I did see some poop and got that out of there.

Fish produce ammonia from their gills as part of their waste elimination methods. Even a fish that is not fed anything will release a substantial amount of ammonia from its gills. Nori has little protein in it so that isn't adding much to the ammonia load.

Can you move more seeded biofilter material over from your DT?
As others mentioned, Prime is not as effective at reducing ammonia toxicity as other products, such as Amquel.

Signs of "ammonia toxicity" are non-specific, the gill and skin damage may not be really visible.

p.s. - I see in my last post, that I misunderstood your question about feeding - I though the fish wasn't feeding of you at all.

@Jay Hemdal thank you for the information.

Curious if AmGuard is similar to Amquel. I have this on hand:

The safety data sheet from Seachem hides the main ingredient as “a trade secret”.

Because Seachem won’t list ingredients, I can’t tell you with certainty, but because they also sell a “dry” form of this, like with Amquel, the main ingredient is likely to be the same; hydroxymethanesulfonate.
I would use this over their prime prodct. Remember though, this will give false positive ammonia readings with some tests that read total, not just free ammonia. Therefore, you’ll need to rely on the ammonia badge.

YAY! Yes, looks fairly content for sure! Did you say you have had her for 10 years now? What size is she, if you don't mind me asking. I am asking to try and determine how fast mine may grow.

Yes. I just put a ruler up to the glass and she looks to be about 7.25" from nose to tail. :)

Cool! Thank you. Mine is currently maybe 5 inches. But mine is not a one spot like yours, mine is the all yellow one. My tank is only 90 gallons. That is why I am asking. I know soon I will need to either rehome her, or get a bigger tank. I am truly on the fence here. I have the room for a 180, just not sure I want to go thru all that.

You know, I have a 180 habitable area tank for her but I wanted a mix reef with SPS and that has proven to be an issue. I think it would have been better for the fish to have more swimming area and rock area to hide...but with coral growing in there's not that much room now without constant trimming.

Honestly, I think a fowler at 180 would be great for her size. But a mixed reef probably should have been 300.
