Gasket material

I posted about this gasjet but not if it's safe. A good chance ill jeed to try a different gasket on my shadow. Has anyone used this? Is it safe?

usually EPDM is what you go with . I would check what label says as IDK about this rubber. May get dry/fall apart w/ the salt.

You can usually go to a gasket shop if you have one around. That is what I have done when I am building something. Also just FYI 45 mil pond liner is same material and could be used however I tend to not like flat gaskets as much for projects as the round type. Good luck

As long as it passes the smell test and is silicone, should be just fine. When you put it on your overflow, also put a strip at the bottom edge. When these overflows leak it is usually because the external box is torqued a bit.

I"M getting that one :) . What do you mean put a strip on the bottom edge? Do you mean on the actual overflow box? along the length of the bottom edge? left to right? That's a good idea whether or not you meant somethign else :)
The one you said I can get thursday and it's a big thicker. That bit of extra thickness can only help I think in cased teh outter box may be pulled away at the top a tiny bit more than the bottom. I think the top is about 1/16" from waht I can tell pulled away with the current thinner gasket. A tiny bit.
I'nm thinking I will use the one at the link you sent for the outter part and leave the inner as is if no leak after replacing the outters.

Exactly. Full length of the external box. It will act as a spacer and help to prevent the box from torquing. Even a slight torque means you get a leak or serious salt creep.

I like the thicker rubber as it is a bit more forgiving.

Happy to help. There are some poor design choices on these things .... surprising since they've been on the market for a while. I gave up and had the overflow integrated into my last tank build.

It seems the overflow and gaskets work overall otherwise there'd be a lot more complaints I'd think. Just odd for whatever reason it's not working for me. Is what it is I guess.
I'll post back on what happens.

I posted this same response in my related thread where others chimed in. Ty to all esp Ca1 :). , hopefully this helps someone else and saves them time.

THAT leak is solved. I ended up using Amazon product ASIN B00XLVN5ZCThe red highlited another issue. The diamater of the orig gasket was too small possibly as well. I realized that when I saw the bright red of the gasket through the dark transparent outter box. So a mix of the better quality? gasket material, it's 2x thicker, and larger diamter solved that leak. I tightened the nut only hand tight, but not max hand tight.
