Going Tyree LE...soon

I am guessing that the argument would be that it exposes the coral to a much larger pool of hobbyists. In other words, when at first only a few people knew about the coral, now a much larger pool of people have the opportunity to see/buy it. When this happens there is a supply/demand issue where the price is inflated.

In the end it is simply a marketing scheme. In some cases it can be a good way to expose a new coral to the market. In other cases it is really silly, for example when a coral already has decent exposure then it gets a "soon to be Tyree LE status". Why doesn't the original vendor keep their own stamp on it?

Well, I'll tell you why. I guess there are one of two reasons. The vendor thinks the coral is so awesome that everyone needs to know about it, so they send it in for Tyree LE. Which is great. At that point the price/demand is high, it's fragged out frequently to recoup costs, and in the end people get access to that coral much faster than if it were not Tyree LE. I think that's pretty cool.

The other reason could simply be that people don't trust the vendor, so in order to prove their corals worth they need to get Tyree LE status. Notice that some pictures that vendors post are highly manipulated.

So there is a good and bad side to this whole thing.

Keep in mind these are just based on my own assumptions/opinions and that I have no factual evidence for any of this information.

Why do other reefers submit their new found corals to be labelled Tyree, Jason F. LE etc. titles? Why? ... because it's a unique specimen and that being (un)officially approved by Steve, Jason F. etc. themselves .... makes this coral(s) a One-of-A-Kind?? Noooo way ... not in my books!!

Can I tattoo my corals "SM" instead? :tongue:

The whole Tyree LE label has been cheapened. It seems like nowadays, the guy will stamp his name on just about anything in exchange for a free coral that he turns around and sells.

Some Vendors take advantage of this and even use the "Tyree LE evaluation" label to charge more before it even officially gets "approved" by tyree.

There used to be wait lists that were booked up years in advance for the opportunity to buy a LE frag from Tyree. Now he has no wait list and sells them directly on his site as soon as they become available.

USED to mean something. it USED to mean the coral was kept for months and years to prove it was up to captive living and was only fraged a couple times a year.
you would think that people would want to preserve such a high level of respect but apparently the dollar is much more important

nowadays the name only means you gave free coral and or just short of purchased the right to put that name on it.

I do not disagree with every dis-persons statements....But I dont understand why alot of you all are saying his new LE's are basically over priced crap, look at the recent LE's I have never seen a millipora like the Fruit Punch nor have I seen and acropora like Mr.Pacman. If you can find colonies of those everyday in your lfs,props to you. I just don't like seeing people getting bashed because they are successful at their business. If you don't like it don't buy it. Buy from people you appreciate and spread the word.

I saw one of the new LE chalices purchased as a fresh import only one month ago. That's barely long enough to settle and be fragged/healed let alone proven in captivity.....

The majority of the new pieces being tagged Tyree have been average, even very common looking corals at best. Have to agree with many of the above posters that it really means nothing anymore to get tagged Tyree LE. If you want to pay a premium for that, then you are foolish...

Yes i've seen the common pale pink milliporas but not a darker neon pink one, like I see in the picture on reeffarmers.

It seems like this thread turned into Tyree bashing thread? Maybe his definition of Farmed is different? He is a member here on R2R. If someone communicated with him on a regular basis maybe they can have him chime in? Sometimes a simple explanation is all that'd needed!

Keep in mind that Tyree runs a business and no matter what type of business it is advertising and hype are the best ways to succeed. What is the term?? Don't hate the playa hate the game!

If Steve Tyree really gave 2 sh**'s about what was said about him and his business don't you think it would be in his best interest to respond and defend himself/shed some light on what really goes on behind the scenes over there at good ole reeffarmers lol. I've never once seen him post anything beneficial to the community or anything really at all TBH....

I posted that from his site because none of these are farmed these are wild specimens brought in tagged and sold.... Where does the aquaculture part come in??? I guess it's okay if 30days in captivity means it aquaculture but it doesn't in my book...

exactly.....he even states that dude sniperipsyouoffonsps only recently acquired both of those pink SPS as recent as early summer 2011. Nothing proven or hardy about that.....corals have been in captive tanks for no longer than 4 months.....

Tyree corals are like CGC rating in the comic or card world. I have watched a $1.00 Shaq card get a CGC rating of 10 (impossible unless the robot placed the card in their plastic sleeve after it was finished drying from the printer) and sell for $1000.00 Of course when you start to realize you can go to some individuals and pay them off so that you can get these amazing ratings of 10 instead of say an 8 or 9, and make that much more money, why wouldn’t you, especially when people will pay the price. The individuals are to blame who continue to buy the products for the crazy prices. I agree the venders are to blame because they are looking for that extra dollar and again people pay for it. In fact I remember going to a store and they were asking $90.00 for a Sunset Montipora for a ½ inch, OUCH. I loved the coloring but I was like in no way would I lay down that much for that little piece. My local club had an awesome frag swap (GO FMAS) and I got a larger piece for $20.00. I think that Tyree’s intentions may have been good in the beginning and may have later become flawed either by him or the venders. It is hard to say what Tyree is thinking/saying/doing. I do not know him and I do not think I ever will. Maybe this thread will get back to him and he will change his ways or just continue to do what he is doing, you never know.
That is just my .02 without going to far into it.
I do have to agree though ORA does a great job and hopefully more will come to follow. Hey if you want you can send me your exotic corals and I will be more than happy to grow them out and if you want name them for you lol, maybe I can become the next ORA.

from reading between the lines the last few months on here it seems to me you are very new to the SPS game and maybe the collecting scene as a whole. Im sure he is aware of this thread,but he probably will not post because even if he gave a true/ligit explanation to all of the bashing, certain people would STILL think they know more about his business than he does and they would continue bashing like they have been.

Tyree made this hobby into what it is today, with out his help and he intent, this hobby would not be here today. This hobby would still be collecting crap corals and not worried about classics or collectors. I just wish some of us would sit back and realize that what he has done has helped all the business out and hobbiest alike.

I am new to owning acroporas,but I am far from not knowing anything about collecting. I like to keep up to date on collector corals an fish regardless of if I own them or not. Just because I do not have something does not mean I do not know anything about it.......



But since these new acroporas are not rare why don't one of you all who have the same colonies post them? Shut me up,please. Once I see pictures of look-alikes I will believe these are not as rare as they seem.

Honestly I think it's acceptable. You gotta pay to play my friend. Like I said a few pages back - this price scheme or whatever you call it isn't just with corals, it's in most every collector hobby such as collectable sports cards which I mentioned a few pages back.

No one is forcing anyone to open up their wallets.

Check out the collected colonies that Diver's Den gets in from Australia. Same quality of colorful wild collected SPS. Only difference is they sold as colonies without a silly made up name.

There are alot of really great looking corals coming in from Australia. Some choose to resell them as they come in for $100-200 for the colony. Others choose to chop them up, make up a name, send a piece to tyree and charge $100 a frag.

They are all coming from the same place it just depends on whose hands they fall into first.
