Not trying to argue with you about how hard core of a collector you are lol.... Just seems you are pretty new to the game and caught up in all the hype that surrounds the current coral market climate..You really think paying $200+ for a single acro frag is normal and should be accepted? No freaking way man, thats robbery....I dont care how "rare" the coral is perceived to be.

I know, I am aware of the hype and I am against hype for false advertised(for example photoshopped) animals. But every nice looking thing, trying to be sold, will be sold with hype. Otherwise it wouldn't be nice...or would it?

For this hobby in particular supply and demand plays a HUGE role in the price thing. If a 2 by 2 in. colony of an exotic acropora is imported for $50 coral price-$200 CITES-+Other shipping fees and the first frags are offered at $100 and they ALL sell out. Then the owner is left with a 1 inch colony and ,since corals are slower growing organsims, most people will up the price because it eventually becomes a limited coral. If the coral is nice enough the originator will recieve ALOT of free/not self made hype,in which creates more demand, and therefore the price goes up yet again, this is how prices get to be $250+ for 1/2 in. But 95 percent of the time, the people that hype things are the ones that buy them, and the people that do not hype are the ones that bash them.

Check out the collected colonies that Diver's Den gets in from Australia. Same quality of colorful wild collected SPS. Only difference is they sold as colonies without a silly made up name.

There are alot of really great looking corals coming in from Australia. Some choose to resell them as they come in for $100-200 for the colony. Others choose to chop them up, make up a name, send a piece to tyree and charge $100 a frag.

They are all coming from the same place it just depends on whose hands they fall into first.

I do agree with this, MANY stores are now offering ULTRA colonies at great prices, divers den is one, this is really good for the hobby imo, because the people that dont want to pay $200 for a frag can get an ultra for a close price! The only bad thing is alot of the wild colonies brown out or die once they are in captivity for a few weeks. The ones that remain colored up are the true show pieces.

They do all come from the same places, but every store's divers have their own "sweet spots" for finding corals, just like fishermen have their own fishing holes, and not to many people know where they are located.

I'll take it one step further and point out that Mr. Coral is doing the same thing as other vendors. Chopping up corals and naming them. The BIG difference is he sells frags for $10.

I have $10 frags from him that look just as nice as $100 frags from other vendors.

Some people just assume a bigger price tag must mean the coral is nicer. I used to think the same thing when I was relatively new to the hobby.

There is a big difference between an extraordinary coral becoming valuable because everyone wants a frag and someone attempting to create a false "hype" by making up a name and tacking on a big price tag right out of the box. Tyree used to auction off the first frag to figure out the "market price". People don't even do that anymore. They just make up a name and price out of mid air and wait for a sucker to come along.

Tyree made this hobby into what it is today, with out his help and he intent, this hobby would not be here today. This hobby would still be collecting crap corals and not worried about classics or collectors. I just wish some of us would sit back and realize that what he has done has helped all the business out and hobbiest alike.

You are right he has made this hobby into what it is today along with some others and that is overpriced and un attainable for some. Case and point, that thread that was posted a couple pages back. You think those acros are worth twice as much now because there is the name tyree in front of it. For some the point of the hobby is to have a piece of nature in our homes and appreciate that natural beauty. At first I understood what he was doing and it made it possible to spread beautiful corals to many people that would never have them otherwise. I dont think there was anything wrong with the hobby before, it was just much cheaper and corals didnt get around as much. Now he is just further developing his "brand" and I don't fault him for that at all, that's like being agry at Nike lol. I don't even fault the people that try and capitalize off of his name, I just won't support it. In a year or two after these new tyree hav been out and they are actually aquacultured and the price has become reasonable I might pick them up. Fact of the matter is there will always be someone to buy
overpriced stuff because they have the expendable income an those that don't have it or won't spend it can just complain about it or wait it out till the prices are more reasonable.

KLR that is the big gripe with Tyree now. He used to hang on to a coral for a long time before giving it that "LE" label. It used to mean something and people were willing to pay more for a coral proven to do well in captivity generation after generation.

Now he us extremely quick to give a coral the"LE" tag even if it was collected just a short time ago. Your latest "LE" is a perfect example.

Yes I know. Ouch pointing me out like that...SHOT OUT OF THE SKY!...........I got it in early February like the site says. That is 6-7 months from when the first frags were sold and today. If a coral holds its color for 7 months I am pretty sure it will remain to hold its color.... If you want a picture I can proove that the colors are still there...

There is a huge differance in a coral being in captivity for 2 months and one being in captivity for 7 months....

It looks hot pink, green, and blue on my pc.....

Yes i've seen the common pale pink milliporas but not a darker neon pink one, like I see in the picture on reeffarmers.

A nice milli no doubt but not something that hasn't been seen in the hobby for many years. $140 for a frag at that...

^^^Exactly. Honestly Ive found nicer milles in the bins up at Aquatic collection for $35 for the entire colony....Reefer831's "electric" rouge mille look alike is just one of them....

Yes and there is also a big difference with LPS and SPS as far has maintaing color etc. I feel safer with LPS maintaining color. Sorry for using your coral as an example.

Just pointing out that Tyree's practice has changed and it is much easier to get something labeled as "Tyree LE" than it was 5 years ago.

Aussie corals as some consider can be regarded as pretty unique and colorful BUT there are certain other regions that does offer the same uniqueness and even better quality specimens as collected from Down Under!!

It's a good thing we never got into the naming game at all!! We Canadians buy what we see as awesome to the eyes of the potential reefer and not by the "LE" title!! That would not sit/sell well over here.

Fortunately for us ... we do get a chance to view the actual corals with our own eyes and decide whether it's worth the purchase. I love Toronto and it's LFS' ...

the only true le acro i have seen since i been in this hobby is the tierra de fuego... it's not stamped but boy does it come with a huge pricetag..... that is one of the very few true le i own imho...

been reading this and just wants to chime in.

Clowns101 states that Tyree made the hobby as it is today because (im guessing here) is that he aquacultured corals and "prove" them hold true to their coloration and beauty over a long period of time, and that they will not melt, change, morph, etc, in different homes. So in that sense, they are worth the high price tag and be branded TYREE LE. However, as stated by others here, as of recently, there seems to be a lot of tyree le, or "soon to be tyree le".

Why is he lending his name to fresh from the ocean corals? why so many TYREE LE status corals in such a short time? So if Tyree is still true to his cause, then he shouldnt be loaning his name so easily to everyone who sends him a piece for "evaluation".

some have posted that he runs a business, so money is top priority. so if he loans his name to hype up fresh corals, then so be it, his cause has changed. end of story.

if you value traditional LE status and actually enjoys real "collectible" pieces, then buy corals that had proven themselves to be LE. If you buy fresh LE corals so you resell to make money, then good for you. everyone wins... except for those who buy early LE hype and the corals failed to hold their status... :)

my .02 =)

DNA could straighten alot of this out...............

I remember the first time I heard about Tyree in 2002. I saw pictures of his stuff and thought "this guy is the man. I want to be that good one day. Skills like that cannot be bought." And now today I see stuff called Tyree and raff out roud. I think to myself "If my name was Steve Tyree, I would be an angry man, or at least be getting a cut of the action."

It seems like both sides of the market are part of the problem. We want Coca-Cola, they want to sell us Coca-Cola, only catch is the supply is 5 a year. So what happens? Off brand gets a label slapped on it, lots of color tweaks and macro shots, makes it looks just like Coca-Cola, and any unwary buyer walks away thinking they just got themselves a nice tasty beverage at the standard Coca-cola price. Only difference is Coke has millions of dollars worth of lawyers and make very good and sure that no one else makes a profit off of their trademark or at least they get a cut. I doubt all the people making money off of Tyree's name are kind enough to give him his fair share.

It could be worse.................it could be 1995 and we could still be trying to sell each other aptasia.

I have seen many nice pink and Blue Milli's but I think thats a beauty, I like the deep color contrast that it has. I have seen that photo before, I think from a vendor here on R2R?
I like the one that myzislow posted as well. Both pink and blue but COMPLETELY different.

I don't feel like commenting and then having to follow up on this. But... I read through most of the posts. Let me start by saying if you contact Tyree and ask about most of the corals, he no longer has them. I read through it saying he has it seeded in a tank. That is not the case. So when you no longer have your bread and butter, you out source. That is the reason for the new influx of named LE pieces at high prices. However I do have a many Higher end pieces, named, LE or whatever. I did not buy the name. I got the coral and the name came with it. I do feel that many many many vendors are able to put huge price tags on corals because people can not live with out them. For most the thought of picking up a new chalice with a high price tag means you can turn it around and maybe make your money back plus, or pay for your piece and keep growing it. However with the more out sourcing and deeper collections, more and more pieces will be streaming in and fetching higher prices. If hobbyist want to see the coral "market" plane out, then stop buying every new thing to hit the forum. And as for the $10 mention before. My hats off to you. Not one SPS piece received from them has ever lived. And I got many from many different places. I will not ever think for 10 bucks I will have something nice, not from them. And I purchased items on 4 different occasions, just thinking it will be different. Anyways, this is an expansive hobby, but if we slow down our consumption of new corals, it will balance out. My 2cents

I have corals of all types. Both high end true aquacultured pieces and $10 fresh cut chop shop pieces.

Death is the risk you take when buying chop shop corals but It's much less painful losing a $10 frag than a $100 frag. Just saying don't be fooled by the price, there are other vendors doing the same thing and charging much more. I am not going to call anyone out but it's pretty obvious to me that some sponsors here are chopping, naming, and charging $$$$$.

FWIW, I have many nice $10 corals from there. Acans, chalices, Favias, and Acros all doing well and holding color.
