Hey everyone! I've decided to start a build thread for my new 80 gallon deep blue rimless! I hope you all can share ideas, critiques, or possibly learn something new from my way of reefing.. which isn't so different that anybody else's way.

LONG STORY SHORT

I previously had a cadlights 50 gallon cube, and a IM 25 gallon lagoon. My 5o gallon was about 4 years old, and the lagoon was less than 1. I was tired of maintaining 2 tanks and wanted to put all of my efforts into 1 beautiful tank, and one that I have always wanted. Also my 50 gallon was nothing but a headache as of recently (probably due to my own doing), but I plan to do things different with my new build!

TANK AND EQUIPMENT

The tank itself is a deep blue 80 gallon rimless, with matching deep blue series 5 stand. Both were purchased brand new! I decided to go with the trigger systems triton 34 sump (At the moment I do not plan on running the triton method, I just like the idea of a big fuge for possibly frags or a mushroom garden..). I cheaped out for the time being and am going with "the quite one" return 1022gph, Skimmer came off of my 50 gallon and is a reef octopus classic 150int, heater is an aquatop 400w, and for lighting I went with the aquatic life t5 hybrid and am planning on running 2 or 3 radion xr15's. My bulb combo is 2 blue plus, 1 coral plus, and 1 actinic. Light is hung from the ceiling. I have apex EL from the previous tank along with a jaebo dp4 dosing pump. I plan on running gyres as flow, whether that be icecap, or maxspect. Still undecided/ shopping. Going bare bottom on this one, as the deep sand in my 50 gallon I believe had something to due with the tank falling down hill.

I meant to start this thread a couple days ago. but as you all can probably understand I have had the new tank fever and have been working nonstop on this!! To bring you up to speed, everything is setup up, the tank is scaped, and I am working on filling it up as we speak. Should be full by the end of the day!!!

My good friend who is also in the hobby is babysitting my fish and all of the coral I wanted to keep, so big thanks to Luke Snyder on that one!

I am using all dry rock with this tank and will use a bottle of Dr. Tims one and only and a fish or 2 to cycle. I am going this route because I don't want to take this risk of any pests, or pest algea entering the tank.

This tank will be a mixed reef but will have more sps and zoas than anything else, oh and A LOT of encrusters on the glass bottom! I meant to take pictures along the way of putting things together, but once again with the tank fever! I did snap a pic of the tank in place. I will update again today or tomorrow when water is in and clear and you guys can let me know what you think of my aquascape.

Just an update! Tank is running and on day 4 of a fishless cycle using Dr Tim’s ammonium chloride and one and only. Please ignore my 5 gallon bucket as my ato reservoir . Water is still a little bit cloudy but is slowly clearing up. Just turned on my skimmer for the 5 minutes ago so that should start to help! Going out of town next week and then some fish will be going in when I get back!

Apex is also hooked up and being used. Drilled a 3in hole in the stand to run my wires and used A LOT of zip ties to keep things cleaned up the best I can.

Working on my dosing pump. I ordered an acrylic bracket for it and added a piece of wood to the stand to mount it. I will be using 1000ml beakers as my reservoirs. I’m thinking about adding another shelf Below it for the beakers to sit on. I will eventually be getting a matching ato container to replace the bucket. I haven’t decided if that will sit next to the stand or in it where the bucket it as now.
