Has anyone used a lab grade pipette instead of the included syringes? I have yet to open the package on my checker but am thinking I will use my adjustable pipette.

Parker's Reef just did a review on the Hanna magnesium checker and it was over 1750 on his tank when it was testing @1350. Even a calibration sample @1310 hit the max of 1800.

Glad i didn't get one - these aren't even remotely accurate.

My experience test 1 1750, test 2 1700, test 3 1800. Read all post before and I guess I can try the 5ml of reagent a and see what I get. But yea the syringes suck.

Ati icp reads 1625, I expect mag to be high. I used red sea which reads like 1480, but don't really trust red sea one for some reason. I used the tips I was reading 1800 then I took the tips of reading 1600. I did 5ml of reagent A as suggested was reading 1390ppm. I am going to try salifert. If you are drawing only reagent A for 5ml because let's say air or whatever doesn't that mean you would do the same when using to draw saltwater let's say in this case 6ml? If they don't find solution will return until they fix there issue. You would think hanna would test these how they come in the kit not some lab test to make sure there product works before sending out. Like a batch kit test.

We are adding an extra 1ml of reagent A to see if that helps the test. Tips or no tips we still draw to the bottom of the plunger. With the tip there's just a little air pocket but it should still be 5ml. The fluid that should be in the air pocket is in the tip. No tip = no air pocket.

Yes I tried adding 1ml was way to low. as you can see in my numbers. Has Hanna said anything other then adding an extra 1ml that didnt help ?

SaltwaterAquarium.com released a video yesterday where Mark ran a test with this checker. His results were high like most everyone else's. He's going to do another video comparing Hanna's results with other test kits. If his results are way off the mark then we'll see if Hanna chooses to respond publicly. They have to be aware that they have a big problem but when one of their large customers shows that problem on video I would think it would be hard for them not to respond.

I just got an email back from Hanna and they said that they checked out my meter and it is working ok against their magnesium reference solution. However, from my understanding, that only tests the hardware and not the reagent which is what I suspect is faulty/out of spec.

The tech support guy sent me a link to the above survey to complete. I'm hopeful they will fix the reagents and get it working given enough time, in the mean time it's annoying that I paid $60 to be a beta tester for what is now essentially a paperweight at this time. I hope Hanna Instruments at the very least compensates us early adopters with some free reagents, coupons or something.

IMO, this type of industry practice needs to be in the spotlight to send a message that we in the saltwater aqaurium hobby won't tolerate garbage equipment for the exorbitant prices we pay for things.

Anybody hear any new updates? I filled out survey. This is kind of stupid way of doing it, they should’ve fixed this issue before selling it. I don’t want to pay for their product and be a test subject. They should issue a full refund.

I asked Hanna to send me my checker back since it checked out “ok”. He sent me this back:

“I can send it right away if you want I was going to give it some time tough until I hear back form my R&D about the issue. Let me know if you want it now or will just wait.”

I told them to keep it for now. Perhaps it’ll help them solve the issue?? Idk. As it stands, it’s a paperweight for me. I’m betting it’s going to be atleast a month or two if not longer.

Do me a favor and redo a test. When Reagent A draws air, you get less of Reagent A in the test pushing the numbers high. Try running a test using the tip but using 5 ml of Reagent A. This will allow for error when drawing up Reagent A. Please let me know how this works for you. I think they created the instructions of 4 ml of A based on lab grade equipment, not regular guys doing the test at home, with plastic tips that suck in air and with all the errors we create. Try 5 ml of Reagent A and let me know how it goes for you.
I have tried that several times and that doesn’t help at all. It just makes the test result 100-200 ppm low instead of high

Same issues. Even tried a fresh batch of TM pro reef, which should be 1300-1400 per their documentation, and got 1540. Called the rep, filled out the form as requested.

I'm wondering if it's something weird like the reagents don't handle shipping in hot trucks or something environmental that wasn't anticipated. Who knows.

Hello, can somebody try this method as well. Don't use any tips, also make sure there is no air bubbles. Reagent A 3.5ml(vs2.5) saltwater 4.5(vs3.5) and reagent B 1ml. Do not use any tips, report back if these lign up with your actual readings. Mine line up with my icp 1620. Usually reading 1800 with tips.
