Hi all,

So I was always thinking about this dilemma as I call it - we put heaters into sump with temp probes too, because it keeps display clean of equipment.

But it means stop of return pump automatically means your display will start cooling down.

Yes I did run and plan to run a power backup (UPS) for return, wavemakers and light, but it still makes me believe overflow should be designed in a way it has section which is always connected to main tank so its perfect place to keep a secondary heater in.

Am I overthinking it?

The only heater I have in the tank is my 13g. No where else to put it.
All other heaters are in the overflow section of the sump, aio too.
No need to overthink it.

If power is off so long that the tank cools down enough to be an issue then I have bigger problems. My backup power source supplies the entire tank if power is interrupted. I have no problem shutting my return off when working on the tank even tho my heaters are in the sump. I think people tend to focus too much on keeping an exact temperature. I've not found a little fluctuation to hurt anything. Some people don't even use heaters or chillers and the tank runs at room temp.

I think you ARE and AREN'T overthinking it :D
My AIO the heater is in the back which is basically the same as the display. But my sump tank has the heaters in the sump.

I think if the power goes out... a generator would be the best bet to power a heater...not sure how long a battery could run a heater? If you're running a geni, might as well run everything in it.

Good thought process though :)

If my return goes out..
The tank will adapt to the room temp - small and slow temp change will not hurt it.

I'd be more concern about aeration for fish - I have two mp40 on batt backups.

I run two return pumps in my AIO for this reason. If one were to fail while I'm away, the other would still keep some water flowing through the back compartments.
