I would still put the ceramic or live rock rubble in the filter. Also a mechanical sponge. What are ypu using for light and flow?
what about the bio balls? what is a mechanical sponge? led lights (blue/white) and a powerhead to flow from the built-in wet/dry out to the tank.

Yeah you can use bioballs. Plastic is not the best. The more porous the better. I like to take dry rock or live rock and bash it up into nickel size rubble and use that. Mechanical filter helps with big stuff as a prefilter. And i would get a the $20 hydor powerhead on amazon for additional flow. Light might or might not be strong enough for corals.
