SIGHING OUT LOUD.

So, I think im having an issue. I think its my circulation problem, but I'm not 100% sure. There is one section in mg tank that i don't think is getting flow, but i have no idea how I'm going to get flow in that area because my sand starts to move around way too much. This is my delema:

It is physically impossible to achieve strong, even flow in a container with ninety degree angles and large obstructions (big rocks). You don’t have an issue.

Have you considered using one of those sand UV wands? Maybe you can zap the growth.

DO not panic anytime you see some new color in your tank, you are going to get to experience the joy of discovering several types of algae growth in your system.

Cyano is a red slime, very noticeably a slime, it is thick and smooth on the top side and it can disappear when lights are off. In order to see the Red you have to shine a WHITE LIGHT on it, what I am seeing on your sand looks discolored by the Blue of your lights, try shining a White Light on it, if it is Green algae as I suspect, then nothing to worry about perfectly normal beginning of the algae phase.

This flows in the current, and it looks shimmy. It's only in that one area too.

You could pick up a second wavemaker. I have two in a 40 and have one on the side in the front and one on the other side in the back. When setting up I usually watch food when I feed. If it settles anywhere that is a dead zone and the flow needs adjustment. Fixing nutrients will also help get rid of it. That rock looks pretty white, so I'm assuming it's a new set up, and could even be going through the dreaded ugly phase. Which will correct itself with time.

So I have a second one on the opposite side the current one I have is on. It can't position it well. I've been just keeping it off because of that tbh. It also moves allll my sand everywhere. Also, I just added that rock in the tank the other day. I have 3 other pretty well established rocks in there too. Do you have any recommendations for a siphon that is for debris in the sand?

I got a cheap siphon on Amazon for like 10 bucks. I posted a pic. I ended up buying a 5 ft piece of extra hose to make it longer but it works good. No leaks.

I am saving up for a bigger one though. The hose size is a bit small but for sand sifting it actually is better bc it takes longer.

Water changes take longer but it’s a fair trade off ATM.

I also have sand moving issues. One thing you can do is chip a piece of rock or get a small flat rock and put in front of where the sand is blowing and it will stop it.

I also don’t recommend buying the special grade sand and sifting the large pieces out. I did it and it was a giant pain in the **** and don’t do much. I broke up a rock in my sump and placed it in front of the blow spot and it’s fixed.

Yeah i have one similar to that, but it does not in fact clean the debris on the sand bed. It just sucks it up and moves it around and then spits it back out in the tank. So I want something that is super long and thin. I tired to use a large pipette, but it would just poor our of the mouth when I pulled it up. So im kind of stuck.

For the other circulation pump, it makes many bubbles in my tank too, like the currents just hit off of each over instead of blending.

Good flow between multiple pumps is definitely tough to achieve. Sometimes it even takes a bit of luck. I use a typical syphon for my sand. I used caribsea Bahamas sand. It moved around with my pumps to. Where I saw it getting pushed around too much I added some larger grade sand/crushed coral to help with it blasting away. If your syphon isn't picking up fish poop and food, could have a clog in it. Happened to me before with a chunk of algae that dried up after cleaning. A pic of the whole tank might give some of us an idea of the rock work your working with. Good flow is so hard sometimes.

That rock is whiiiite, new tank? Check your N/P levels, I imagine they are pretty low. Fresh dead rock is a nutrient sponge (phosphate especially), amplified around the 6 month mark if you are running squeaky clean. That is a very small amount of cyano, nothing to be alarmed about, just your tank telling you something is a bit out of whack and needs a little attention.

Okay. I have a different rock that is stabled in a previous tank, but that is covered in the same stuff. Like big time. Can I just scrub it off and put it in my tank so I can reduce the issue. I'm checking my parameters today.

I have like 2 inch frag rocks, should I scatter them around?
I thought about purchasing a siphon with a filer. Thought or recommendations?
I also know i need more rocks. That is my plan this week. ( i buy already aquaculture live rocks)

You sure can add that to you tank. Manual removal for cyano after you get your nitrates/phosphates up should get that taken care of in no time though.

Welp. Whatever you had I got.
Wouldn’t siphon. Clumped up and just rolled up into little snot balls.

I took a 3 foot plastic rod and a hamster scoop (it’s a real thing)

Hot glued and zip tied the scoop to the rod and kaboom.

Brown ugly stuff comes out.

PS. Turn off the pumps and wave maker otherwise your aquarium will look like a snow globe. Well mine did.

Pic of the scoopers. You get like 8. And the rod. I found one in the garage.
