I’m stumped. This tank has been up since March of last year. When I first introduced the live rock there was a small fish that looked like a wrasse that had a small black spot just behind the eyes and was mostly pink in color but very small. Once I put him in it hid in some rocks and I didn’t see him again. This was pre-cycling so I figured he was just gone.

Fast forward to a few nights ago and my son captures this picture of a fish in the rocks after lights out. It looks much darker than what we saw come on the live rocks and we’ve never seen this fish before and we haven’t seen it since.

Current fish include Clown fish, Green Chromis, Bangaii Cardinal, Sailfin Tang, and a Melanarus Wrasse. None that look like what was captured.

Anyone able to ID this fish from just the picture of the head? We haven’t seen it again since. We’ve been checking every night and we’ve never seen him during the day.

Edit: Adding a picture of part of the tail which is orange.

Has the face of a blenny. Dont think its a tailspot but need to see rest of the fish. Im thinking Camouflaged quillfin blenny

i think it’s a tessellated blenny
(nice hitchhiker if so!)

Thanks everyone. I like blenny for this.

Anyone have any suggestions on how I can coax this guy out? It’s still in disbelief that’s it’s been almost a year and we’ve only spotted him once by chance at night.

Looks like a match to me, and I'm glad to be shown a fish I don't think I've looked at before - neat hitchhiker to have, and looks like it'll stay small.
Yep, will stay small and hides out in crevices. Initial research suggests it’s safe to keep around.

Looks to be a Trimma goby of some sort with the side markings and small eyes. If its small, then probably is a pygmy gobie or some sort. Amazing fish,I wish thwy were available more often.
