How do you encourage other reefers?

I've been doing this saltwater thing for a long time.
I know some stuff about some things.
I only speak on things I know.
All I ask is we all be kind to one another.
That's how I encourage others.
It's amazing how far a little kindness will go. 😊
Peace ✌️
Joel

Not so much encouragement but I tell them to stop fidgeting and messing around with their tanks so much. Lighting is the big thing to me. Set it and forget it. Everytime you make a change to your lights you’re basically hitting the reset button and the growth of your corals becomes stagnant for months having to adapt to the new settings before they get going again.

Never thought of that

Nothing wrong as far as I am concerned someone with no degree in the sciences to voice an opinion based on experience. And be willing to be proven wrong with facts as opposed to be bullied with just another opinion which does create a toxic environment . If someone responds with facts than it is a learning experience😃

Thank You that helps the part that bothers me is that they have " reef squad ' in their profile. So as I said to them they presented themselves as an expert taking away any if any credibility I may have built
I am sorry you had a bad experience with one of the RS members.

I, for one, try to offer options, different approach or share my experiences, good and bad. I do not know everything and will never express that in my posts. I always welcome new ideas and techniques that I can then share with other members. Being condescending or talking down while answering a question or responding to a post sets a bad example and leaves a bad taste in the persons mouth. Unfortunately, I see that often in various threads. I'm not saying from RS members, but members in general.

As @Reefer Matt stated, we are not experts but are willing to help figure out a problem or find/research the answer.

Can you DM me and link me to the thread you are referencing?

Very well stated my friend!

Have a blessed day Joel!

Whether it's "beautiful tank," "keep up the good work" or "looking great" how do you encourage other reefers?

Is there more that us reefers can do to encourage others besides words?

Just thinking out loud here! 😁

Try to compliment the good and help equip with shared experience and knowledge to tackle the issues we all face. Let them know there’s a way out and that we all have similar struggles, if not now have had them in the past and likely to happen in the future. Not if but when. This is a hard hobby. If you have some success you should be proud. I’ve worked in the retail side of the hobby and so many people just can’t do it. If you’re here and learning and have some successes you’re actually doing really well. Despite the inevitable issue or failure that arises.
Hang in there if you’re struggling. Keep up the good and plan ahead if things are going well.

Its Ok we talked , and dont want to make a big deal out of it. There are also two sides in every dissagreement. he did not respond but I just tried to remind him that having that reef squad badge carries a lot of weight and therefore responsibility

I try to relate to shared frustrations by admitting that I have been there too. That way they don't feel like they are the only one.

I also share the good, the bad and the ugly about my own tank in my tank thread. After all, its a reef journey and sometimes we learn things the hard way! But one can bounce back from anything if they want to.
I love this. Transparency is something this hobby lacks. I try my best to just snap a pic and post it, I’ll tell you if it’s with a filter or not, or if I did any post editing (usually not). I show my tank from every angle zoomed out and in. I’m not hiding my sump, algae, Aiptasia, fish death, coral concerns, etc. I’ve been in this hobby too long to think there’s a perfect tank. I’ve learned a lot and have mostly success now, but it took a lot of years and experiences both good and bad to develop a true feel and accurate assessment of my system to mostly know how to react. I still sometimes over react (my worst reef habit) or make bad choices (my tank is considered overstocked by many, I’ll honestly update here how that goes).
I use this forum to share and learn from others as well. I have learned so much about the care of Acropora, useful and non-useful supplements, and fish care/QT since restarting my reef journey here a year and half ago. I thrive in environments of curiosity and personal growth.
Future plans I’m working on and gained from this forum are electrical safety, optimal lighting, and encouraged by some friends on here to send a baseline icp!

I really appreciated your compliment the other day FYI. Thank you!

Like you, I have learned a lot on here and before that on Nano-Reef. I appreciate those who took me under their wing to explain things. I was pretty much ignored on a forum I was on in the early 2000s. My experience on N-R and on R2R has been so much better. I never want anyone else to feel like an outsider so I strive to engage in areas that I can contribute positively.

You are welcome about the compliment. Its true, your tank is very beautiful!

Thanks for the love! We have great members like yourself that make R2R a great place to talk reefs!
