How much kalkwasser ( warning ph based question inside)

Isn’t there a dosage like 1g per 100ltr increases .5kh for example

I run an 85 g total system. A 10ml dose of hydroxide adds 0.2 pH and adds .5 dkh.

I test regularly with Apex Trident so I am able to note down how much dosing affects my tank. This calculation is based on Randy's note:

At about 7 dKH and pH 8.1, adding 1.4 dKH instantly boosts pH by about 0.65 pH units, and it falls back from there as the tank pulls in CO2. If you spread that addition out, each boost is proportionally smaller, and the pH drops back after each one.

For Kalk, my dosing calculation is (at full saturation because I use a kalk stirrer):
100 ml = 0.02 pH increase, 0.05 dkH increase
1000 ml = .2 pH increase, .5 dkH increase

With that, I dose at night spread out the 1000-2000 ml to maintain pH. This is based on my tank size so your mileage may vary.

So for your 85g system, simply what's the total Kalk (how much ml) do you dose in a 24 hours cycle? And do you only dose during the 12-hour night time? Thank you.

I only dose Kalk from 9pm to 5:30am before my light turns on at 6am. Total of 2400 ml (at most). Keeps my pH above 7.8

I use the calculator to determine how much to dose based on my average evaporation rate of 2400ml.

Sometimes I add sodium hydroxide up to 10ml at 9am to bump my pH higher based on alk level. I maintain alk at 8.5 to 9.5 daily.

I was playing with changing my kalkwasser dosing rate to improve pH control. By rate I mean milliliters per hour, not the total ml in a 24hr period. I was keeping the total rate constant. I always dose kalkwasser only at night.

I experimented a little with higher rates early in the night vs higher rates late in the morning just before the lights came on, vs constant rates. Randy suggested that higher rates just before the lights came on could have a greater impact on pH.

I never completed the experiments because I found aeration to be a dominant effect, but preliminarily it looked like I got a higher average pH by about 0.02 - 0.03 by biasing my kalkwasser dose more to to the morning, just before the lights came on. Not a big impact, but I am also not using a lot of kalk. I ended up leaving it with higher rates for the last few hours before the lights come on.

I did notice fairly significant impact on alkalinity consumption by dosing higher rates over a short period. I also think I’m seeing more coral growth in the past 2 months, which tracks.

Just sharing because you like pH :)
