Hello,

I was wondering if anyone had advice on what flow patters are best for the hydros wave maker. I have a 100g mixed reef 4ft long with octopulse 4 on right and left sides. I just had it set to generic LPS reef but now that I am adding more coral I figured it was worth seeing if there are any other recommendations. The hydros website describes the other programs like sine wave, gyre, square wave etc but still not really sure what is best. Day and night program different??

Thanks for any input!

I use several different ones depending on time of day. I also have Nutrient Export setup to run for an hour after each feed mode.

Hello, I’m curious as well. Do you think you could list the time periods and what patterns you run? I just run the Sine pattern 24/7 with 3 OctoPulse 4’s.

I would suggest to google the coralvue instructional videos and watch a few for some idea's.

I had an issue last month and a techician called me to fix the problem in 15 minutes, then he spent the next 15 minutes showing me different things the wave engine is capable of. He explained that probably 75% of people are not using it to its full potential, I thought that was so interesting. just sharing

Yes I’m definitely not using it to full potential. I think I they could make some more guidance on what to use. If they think that 75% of their customers aren’t using it correctly or to full potential then that should suggest that they could do a better job explaining! Like most things, I’m sure this are a ton of ways to go but this but in the small sample of this post alone someone is using sine wave, ocean swell, a full custom schedule and me using LPS because I have some torches!

Right! Would be cool to have some example schedules or even have the ability for users to upload their schedules? Yes, all tanks are different, but would be cool nonetheless to play around with it without having to do so much research. I just wanna be dumb sometimes. 😂

Yeah, it's kind of ironic to say that the majority of your customers don't understand half of what your product can do, and then NOT update or post any tutorials, guides, manuals, etc.

I was looking for a specific flow setup for my tank and couldn't find anything anywhere on how to actually accomplish it. Then I posted in a thread here, got a good explanation and got everything configured exactly how I wanted it.

Once you "get it", you "get it", and then the flexibility opens WAY up. It just shouldn't be that hard to find it in the first place.

The manual pages on the main site are where they try to keep updated to the latest app version: https://www.coralvuehydros.com/product-support/hydros-waveengine/

This is the resource that is linked to from every product sold via a QR code inside the box.

From that resource above you can read about pump schedules which include flow modes: https://www.coralvuehydros.com/product-support/hydros-waveengine/add-flow-pump-schedule/

There are very old videos out there from when the WE first came out, and they are so outdated. They are avoiding making similar videos again since things change over time and its much harder to keep updating old videos vs a central guide that I have linked above.

I went through those, and they list all the options, but give little-to-no detail on the things you can do with them. Listing options doesn't really give you insight into all the things you can do with them. Yes, I understand that you can't make a tutorial that shows everyone everything, but they don't really show much of anything.

I wanted a schedule that would make my left gyre run for two hours in one pattern/speed while the right gyre sat idle. Then after those two hours passed. I wanted the right gyre to come on for two hours at a specific pattern/speed while the left one went idle. Seems easy enough, but it ended up being 12 individual schedules (6 left and 6 right) that used several "advanced options" to accomplish. All those "advanced features" are explained in the manual, but there is no mention at all of how they actually work, or how they work together. It took me several tries and a R2R thread to get me there.

Edited to add: This is something I accomplished on another tank using Jebao pumps with their wifi enabled controllers, app and 10 minutes of setting it all up. Having all the options is nice, but also kind of worthless if their application isn't apparent without in-depth research.

The original app for the wave engine was a user exp nightmare. They had so many layers of configurability that you could hang yourself on every little thing. It was super super powerful from a features standpoint but only engineers could really figure it out. The way its done now is leaps ahead but still not super user friendly.

Agree it would be nice to see a revamp of the UI

I have a 8’ Planet 310 gallon. I have two Reef Octopus Pulse 4’s on each end with anemone guards pointed towards the center overflow. I run 50% constant flow at night. 6-7 am it goes to Ocean Swell at 60%. 7-8 am its Ocean Swell at 75%. 8-12 it ramps to 85%. 12-2, while the lights are brightest, it runs at 95%. 2-6 it’s back to 80%. 6-7 at night is Nutrient Export at 95% to clean everything, then drops back to 50% constant flow for the night. I also have it programmed with a 0-10v to my Apex to drop to 5% for 15 minutes for feed mode.

I use the ocean swell pattern 24x7.

Maybe a dumb question, BUT …… how do you guys have your flow percentages set? Are the individual inputs set to 100% max with the schedules controlling the rates or vice versa or does it matter?

I have a schedule set up for 100% max speed, flow pattern ocean swell, that has both my my maxspects in it, Positions left and right end.

Then I have outputs for both maxspects set up, variable pumps, direct, gyre350, used in schedule wave makers (the schedule above), and with the pumps actual speeds restricted to 25-35%.

You best bet is like BryanM says is to set the schedule to 100% and use the individual pump outputs to limit the flow rates for both minimum and maximum. That way you can regulate each pump separately for minimum and maximum flow but still control them with the same schedule. The Schedule 1% to 100% would start at the minimum flow setting for the pump output and end at the high flow for the pump output.

Super helpful, thank you.

I have been working on some schedules and have settled on this plan below for my tank. I have a 4ft UNS R120 which has 2 random flow returns and I have an Octopulse 4 on the right and left sides facing each other.

R and L wave makers set to "speed limit" of 15%-60% forward and reverse. They are very powerful and 60% flow is pretty aggressive for 4ft tank

Day Flow Schedule:
7AM-9PM (light on)
Ocean Swell pattern
Max speed 100% (AKA 60% of pump max capable flow)

Night Flow Schedule:
9PM-7AM
Sine wave
2 minute cycle duration
Speed range 1%-50% (AKA peak of 30% of max capable flow)

I use manual feed mode when I give frozen food and it turns wave makers off for 15mins.

Overall this seems to work for my tank and my torches are very happy with long extension and random back and forth flow. My acropora attempt continues to go poorly but I don't think I can blame the flow patterns... 😩

I used to turn my wavemakers off for feeding. Then I lost a chromis to one. The chromis would try to use the wavemakers as caves if I let them shut off completely. Now I just drop them to 5%.
