Only if that web based server is working. Which it wasn’t when they forced that update. That update crashed my system. Luckily I was 20 minutes from home and could leave work to restore functions to my tanks.
I hate reading these types of post. What a nightmare. At least you were close and able to avoid disaster.

Ya. Im still dealing with issues as it broke my feed program. Have come home to the wrong pumps on when they should be off etc. I think I finally got that fixed just this morning.

Coralvue don’t give a warning of changes. And updates absolutely are forced. You have no choice. It’s a seriously goofy decision for a life support system.
 
No, you are missing the point. I said there are compatibility issues, not interference.
Reframing comments to have a petty argument is ridiculous. My point stands -- there are very valid reasons that most IoT devices are 2.4 GHz only, and will continue to be that way. I laid out the factual reasons. "2.4 GHz" is infinitely more "compatible" in jut about any flavor of deployment than "5 GHz" - see points above about protocol complexity and options.

Sure, until a newer dual band wireless router/ap that with band steering stops or delays responding to a 2.4ghz device on 2.4ghz in an attempt to steer it to 5ghz.

An AP can't and wont attempt to "band steer" a 2.4GHz device to a 5 GHz SSID if the device does not have a 5 GHz radio. FULL STOP. This is because the 2.4 GHz device does not have a 5 GHz beacon that tells the AP that it is a candidate. You are a victim of the very misinformation that I am attempting to correct.


Having a separate SSID that is configured for 2.4ghz only is the easiest way for end users to take band steering out of the equation.
Except that the vast majority if end users are absolutely ignorant of how to do that, even if their device allows it. See my points above -- there is a reason that most IoT devices remain 2.4 GHz.

I think Bean hit a salient point that I would want to know what the view of CV is?

Does CV view the product as an IoT system or actual life supporting equipment?
Those were my words "life support" - based on my expectations. To that end, it would highly depend on what somebody relies on the system for. :)


Some are seemingly more focused on the Tech and some more focused on the reef and a lot of reefers are at varying degrees of either side.
Yep -- everyone gets something different from the hobby and has different expectations.

how was the update forced? I had to manually download the update for the app on my iphone and then manually update the firmware on my devices? How did your become forced?

You can't use your system until you update it. When I went to the web based server to access my system it was down. When it finally came back up it was informing me that an update was mandatory to resume use of my devices. I was getting alarm after alarm that I had experienced a full system failure. When I got home everything was off. When I rebooted and updated everything resumed normal functions to a point. Like I said earlier it broke my feed schedule somehow but I made an adjustment and got it work. Not how I want it but acceptable for now.

Therefor that is a forced update. My system was completely inaccessible and my tank functions had ceased until I updated. If it wasn't forced you would still be able to use the app fully. You can't use your app until you update both the app and the controllers.

Sounds like your phone/app auto updated, which is a setting on your phone.

The app updating will not affect your controllers unless you have them download the firmware update and have them install it. Never install firmware to a controller if you are not in the same location as the controller. The controllers will continue to run fine even if the app updates as long as you do not try and update the firmware remotely. You just won't be able to access them using the app. I have downloaded the firmware to the controller remotely and then installed it when I got home to save some time before.

Only the app on the devices you have them installed on will update automatically. The controller will not and they will continue to function as they were setup to do. If the app update the worst is it will not let you access the controllers until you update the firmware on the controllers but never do that unless you are at the location where the controllers are at. So the worst that can happen is you loose remote access to the controllers. You would continue to get push notifications and emails from the controllers. The app has a link to a web app version of the precious app but in this case changing it was delayed so some did get the web app for the version that was even older until t was corrected. Just don't try and update the firmware on the controllers unless you are there to intervene if something were to go wrong. The controller run independently of the app. I close my app unless I want to check on the tank so 98% of the time the app is not even running.

the app auto updating will not affect the controller since those are not auto updated. They will remain as they are until the firmware has manually downloaded and you select for the controllers to be updated. Since they do run independent of the app they will continue to run as they were setup until you can get to their location and then install the new firmware. You just won't be able to gain access and check on it with the new app installed. unless you use the previous version of the web app which usually there is a link displayed in the new app if the controllers still have the old firmware installed.

Trying to be respectful, but you twist every design shortcoming to be some kind of positive, or non issue.

Not my idea of a reasonable architecture. One should be able to choose when to update their app if said update may renders access broken until the controllers are fully updated. Full Stop.

Passive band steering has no clue if a device has a 2.4ghz or 5ghz radio, and it attempts to determine if a devices has both radios by initially ignoring 2.4ghz probes for a period of time. FULL STOP.

Cisco Meraki is a perfect example. They actually changed the way their band steering worked back in 2022. Prior to the change the SSID was not broadcast in 2.4ghz beacons, so any older client doing passive scans would not find the SSID. They also made changes to how the APs responded to 2.4ghz probes. Instead of ignoring all 2.4Ghz probes for 60 seconds waiting for a preferred 5ghz probe, it only ignores the first 2.4Ghz probe. The SSID is always broadcast as well, providing better backward compatibility with older devices that may only perform passive scans to discover wireless networks.

Do you think it might be possible that some older 2.4Ghz clients quit trying to connect before the 60 second timeout expired?

Might some older 2.4Ghz clients have issues connecting to an SSID that is hidden?

Have all vendor made changes to their passive band steering behavior?


We can agree to disagree on IoT vendors choice to only use 2.4Ghz radios, but I will not concede that there are no circumstances where a 2.4ghz only SSID might be helpful to resolve a connectivity issue.

It would be nice if Apple or the Android system allowed you to select each app as to whether they auto update or not. It is an all on none on both systems I believe. Coralvue has to submit each app update to both Apple and Android before anyone can update to the new app. When they do and Apple and Android puts it in their app store the app will automatically get updated id you have auto update setting on on your device with the app. So when your app gets updated is not directly controlled by CoralVue. It has to be in the Apple and Android store for anyone to get the update. So I am not sure how else it can be done using Apple and Android platforms for the app.

They has nothing to do with the issue. Please stop making excuses for CV — they are the ones pushing breaking updates. This speaks both to the overall architecture and their management of when and how updates are pushed.

BTW they have the option of using in-app updates that can be user requested.

I found it, thanks.So far on my phone I have check it and let it update but I never have wifi turned on so that mY be why none of them auto update on my phone.

No, problem. You can configure Android to automatically update apps over cellular too, but only do so if you have truly unlimited data or a high throttling cap or else your data rate may get throttled.

Of course you can turnoff auto-update if it is an app store app — that does not change the issue that I have with the way that updates are handled.

Only for the Android. I have not found a way to turn it off on the Apple devices for an individual app. On Android apparently you can and that would solve the app from updating unless you do initiate the update. So on Android just turn off auto update for the Hydros app and then it will be up to you when it updates It will not automatically update on you. I rarely use my phone to access the controllers. I use the app on my iPad or the web app to gain access.
