Installing sump tonight..

Hi peoples,

My sump is being delivered today and I needs help!

After I figure out how to get it into the stand with no help (if I can't do it alone, I'll have to call my superintendent).. I'll need help on how to hook it up.

Can someone advise me what plumbing things I need? I am a total newb when it comes to sumps.
I have the return pump being delivered by the end of the week.

Tank:
75 gal reef-ready with corner overflow.- 48"x18" Footprint
Sump:
Trigger Systems Crystal- 36 inch (I feel like I should've gotten the 30 inch just for the sake of getting it in the stand! lol)

I figured out the layout of how I am going to do this.

I am confused on what size fittings I need to fit on the bulkheads, filter intake, and pump return. I guess I need to look at what's available and figure it out- unless someone has an idea?

here's a rough sketch I did.. can someone tell me if its OK, layout-wise? and supply-wise?

Read my sticky thread on Bulkhead Tips, you should find some good info there.
I would not place a valve on the overflow side, it serves no purpose and would always remain 100% open anyway.

That would be loud as heck..... Use both holes (You only have two?!) for the overflow and plumb up the return separately.

I am assuming the tank is already drilled with bulkheads.
The bulkheads will determine your pipe size

As Twillard said, the size of the bulkheads will determine the pipe size. It is very common to see a 1" overflow and a 3/4" return on predrilled tanks, that's what my 100G has.
In over 35 years of saltwater tanks I have never once found the need for a backup overflow or dual overflows except in huge systems. My current tank has been up 13 years and the same with the 90 before that and never any issues or noise.

The tank is pre-drilled with bulkheads- bottom corner of the tank. two holes which I believe are the same size.

the valve just for the return pump line?

if I find the current plan too noisy, I will look into figuring out another way. I don't mind a little noise, which I expect, just not to where I can't hear the TV

With a properly set up Stockman standpipe it will be totally silent. Its easy to do, you might search my username and Stockman and dozens of threads describing how I feed an airline down the cap should pop up. It really works.

thank you!! my LFS advised a flexible tubing for the return pipe should reduce noise too. so I got that as well

I use the clear braid reinforced tubing for both my overflow to the sump and for my returns. The nice gradual bends and turns are much quieter than the abrupt elbows in ridgid PVC to me. One thing I do though is step up one size on the inside diameter to account for the smaller diameter inside the barbed nipples so there is less headloss or restriction, especially on the gravity overflow side.

This is the braided tube I got- I believe its the one @AZDesertRat is referring to- correct me if I am wrong!

I got my sump in my stand last night, and pieced together the plumbing. Just need to check out a different valve before I glue all the pieces together tonight. The ball valve I find is too hard to turn, I want to see if there's something that's easier to turn.

Use threaded valves and fittings where ever possible so you can disassemble for cleaning or replacement. I don't have hardly any glued PVC.

I haven't thought about that- a lot of guides I read said to glue. How often would one need to clean the pipes, considering it's moving water almost all of the time?
